I noticed my car making some ticking/tapping noise coming from the engine about 3 months ago. The noise would get louder as the car warms up. Then I tried putting in Lucas oil stabilizer 3 days ago to see if it would helps but it seem to made the noise even worse. So I drained everything out and put new oil in and the noise has been worsen ever since. I’m a college student with little money so I can’t afford much. Will I be needing a new engine? Any advice will help thanks!

2016 Hyundai Veloster Turbo

I was going to ask how long ago and with how many miles was this 'boy toy' purchased.

I think the OP bought "someone else's headache" (a term my dear Mom used to use).
As KrisZ said, get a piggy bank.

You can't play the "I'm a poor college student" card when you buy a dumped glam turbo sports car.
Godspeed in rectifying your transportation situation. I pray a 5W-40 synthetic will afford some relief.
Keep your head out of your turbo intake when selecting your next vehicle.

Hyundai engines of that era do have a bad reputation. It's possible Hyundai will replace the engine at reduced or even no cost to you.

I would start by going to your local Hyundai dealer.

What's the likelihood of that actually happening with modified intake 8 years later ?
Seems like a pipe dream.
I'd have to trust the tech at the dealership; if it's likely that the wear was caused by poor air-filtration due to the mods, then I'd have to take my lumps.

However, if the tech saw evidence of a typical failure, I would hope he would support my case.

I would not try to deceive the dealership by reverting to the stock set-up before taking it in.

Then you are a better man then me :D
Would you tell them there had been Lucas in it too?

^^^ good post.

I’m not positive that’s lifter tick. It might be, it could also be accessory noise. You’d need to pull the valve cover off and look for too much or too little valve lash, for starters (excessive slop in the valve rocker arms, there is a little allowable slop, measured with a feeler gauge).

It’s not a good sign that it’s getting worse, regardless of thickened or correct oil viscosity. If that’s the case, it gives the idea that something is on its way to letting go.

Also, is this car direct injection? If so, it may not be valves/lifters at all, but the sound of the high pressure fuel pump (HPFP) as it is pumped by a cam lobe.

Agree, based on the rate of changing sounds, it’s worth getting this to a dealer. BTW - nice car, looks like it’s in good shape. Don’t let hazing on the air intake hit too hard - there are assumptions in play that we can’t gauge accurately. It sounds good - I can hear it in the video, but as the others are letting on, the reusable cloth filters can flow more air but at the expense of less filtration, which I can testify to. (Take a white glove and wipe down the inside of that intake tube, to get a gauge yourself).

Good luck, dealer time. Since those engines do have some weaknesses, they may cover some or more of the repair.

Ack, I'm honest to the point of being a self-righteous morality policeman sometimes. There's a big downside to that. As Popeye says, "I yam what I am". Pick your poison. 😁

As far as the Lucas, I think the OP added it to try to quiet down the noise, so I down think it was the main cause.
