I have 5 psi at idle with 5w20 at full operating temperature and over 100 when cold.

Your pressures are spot on nothing wrong with it thats where they run on these trucks with the factory 5w30.
Are you saying the gauge is accurate and 40psi @ idle is spot on for those trucks with 5w30 ???

totally agree with the piston slap diagnosis. its the nature of the "vortech" beast. my 2000 4.8l slapped from 75000 until i traded it @ over 100,000 miles. it still ran perfect with no consuption or smoke.
i also agree that your engine will run forever slap or no slap. its just annoying. the best oil i found for my truck was valvoline durablend 5/20. it seemed much more quiet.(not sure why??)

Ok, so I cant see where people are saying just below the 40 mark is too high of a pressure at operating temp idle. Ive driven and owned several 6.0, 5.3 GM V8s and they all read like this. Even if all the Oil pressure guages were innacurate, forget the numbers on the dash and understand the needle movements are all very similar wether hot idle, cold start up, acceleration, whatever.
Not trying to start a war here but this is how it is. Anyway, the truck in question consumes very little, and has no oil pressure isssues. The guage has acted just like this for its whole life. So i guess this is just piston slap arriving in its golden years. I will let it live out its life on 5w30. I want to get my hands on the 6.2L anyway!
