I've always run Pennzoil Conventional 5w20 in my scion with fram tough guard filters (did use a Bosch once) but my last oil change I tryed Pennzoil Platinum 0w20 and a Purolator Classic. Its always run quiet, even on the PP with the only noise being heard with the hood up being the injectors ticking away. I started it up this past sunday, about 1,030miles on the current run of PP and it had a pretty loud valve tap that wouldn't go away even when hot, actually seemed worse the hotter it got. I changed oil again and went back to Pennzoil Conventional and a fram tough gaurd filter just to see if by dumb luck that fixed it, but ofcourse it didn't. Its hard to tell if its coming from the valves, which are cam on bucket I think, so there would be no adjuster to back off. I figure maybe it could also be coming from the cam phasers or maybe the timing chain, but I think that would cause a littelbit different noise than what I'm hearing. I know some ford v8's have the issues with a tapping sound and it comes from the cam phasers, so I'm hopping thats all it is. My questions are, do the 2AZFE's definately use cam phasers, and would warranty cover this since i'm the second owner (only 23,000 miles)? Thanks

I think the scion (Toyota) Warranty is 3/36 so you should be covered. -Get it into the shop and let the experts handle it.

My guess is oil brand has nothing to do with it.

I kinda think they extended it on 2011 Scions and up, but I wasn't sure if it would still cover mine since I'm not the original owner. I remember my VW I had years ago still covered me even though I was the second owner, but it was a reduced warranty period because I was not the original owner. I didnt' think oil brand had anything to do with it, I was just throwing it out there to see if anyone had any ideas.

In the camry the 2AR engine went with oil squirters and HLA on the valves, the earlier 2azfe had SUB with no valve lash adjustability without teardown. Ive had problems with cam vvt mechanism and valve lash out of spec on our old rav 4 (2005) with the 2azfe. IDK if the 11 scion uses the newre engine with HLA. I'll take a look in wiki ... IDK if the reported "head bolt rot" issue is limited or real trouble.

update: It appears this scion may not have the newer 2AR engine, from my limited research.

Thanks ARCO. I'm wondering if its a problem with the Cam phazers, cause it actually seems to get worse the hotter it gets, and I would think noise from excessive valve lash would get a little better when hot. Its also idled rough ever since I got it until my coolan temp. got hot enough to turn the "cold coolant" light off (no temp. gauge in the 2011's and up), then it would idle smooth as glass. Idles a little rough now that it started making noise. I've heard of the issues with the head bolts rotting out before. Can that be avoided by changing the coolant regularly? I was thinking of changing it every 2-3 years which would be about every 30,000 to 45,000miles.

The important part is that the vehicle is covered under warranty, make sure you get it into the dealer and have the issues confirmed, have it on record with an internal RO.

There was another Scion owner with this same engine a number of months ago that also complained of noise. I forget exactly whom...anyone?

^^^
Yeah, the guy made a video of the bad noise on start up.

The dealership said the noise is 'normal'

Thats for the 2.5 though that is in the TC's and Camry's. Mine is the 2.4 2AZFE. My noise is also noticable all the time, not just at start up. I've been through this with chrysler before when I had my 2 jeeps, one had piston slap real bad and the other had a valve tap. they claimed it was normal on both, I filled lemon law and settled out of court on the one with the piston slap. I really hope they fix this, I bought a toyota product because I was sick of dealing with chrysler products and their [censored] service. Its going in tomorrow morning.

Sick of dealing with Chrysler?

I hate to tell you but welcome to Toyota, where they don't build defective products.

Come back and tell us after you get the "normal operation" speech. Maybe we won't tell you "we told you so".

But we probably will.

PS-stay away from Fram Oil filters (and Bosch).

I know Fram aren't the best, but I havn't had an issue with them so far, where as I've had ADBV issues with Purolators a couple times. Pretty sure Purolators and Bosch filters are both owned by the same company, but maybe I'm wrong. If there was a Motorcraft filter that fit my car, i'd use that in a second.
Didn't here back from the dealer at all today, so I'm hoping that means they actually found something and are fixing it. If this whole scion/toyota thing doesn't work out, I think I might go with Ford next time around. My father in law is a tech. for a Ford dealer and theres many times where he will bring a car home with him at night, trying to get the customer complaint to reoccur, so atleast I know they try.

That's the dealer, not the manufacturer.

A good dealer is worth their weight in gold. And you can find them in all the manufacurers. Same with bad ones.

Go with word-of-mouth for a dealership. And recent word-of-mouth at that, because they change owners/managers often. You'll be glad you did.

Whatever you do put the correct weight and a good-not Fram-oil filter on it- before you try to get warranty work.

Yes, back in 2003 My mom's 2002 Toyota Solara was leaking oil.

Once we had proof that the oil pan gasket (Actually just RTV from the factory) was leaking, I was stuck listening to a bigshot at the dealership tell us how Toyota cars don't leak oil. The mechanic comes in and confirms that the engine was leaking oil from the pan, and that bigshot didn't even make an apology for being wrong.

That led me to eventually buy that Saturn.... What a dumb decision that was.

Well, Mr.Critical was right. This was a lousy dealership experience. I dropped it off wenesday evening for thursday morning and was told they would call me thursday to let me know what they found. Thursday came and went, no call, I figured, ok, maybe they found something and are fixing it. I finally called them at lunch today, and after being on hold for awhile, I was told that it was done and that they had called me around 5pm thursday and left a message on my cellphone. Funny, it never rang, and I had no missed calls. Then they tell me that the tech was not able to replicate the problem and that it ran normally. I said, thats funny, it has the tap all the time, and it didn't have that until this past sunday. I'd say that isn't running normally. So, I guess I'm done with them. I'm going to try another dealer near me, maybe go down on my lunch break and have a tech listen to it before I drop it off and am without it for atleast a day again only to have them tell me its "normal."

Well, when I picked it up, they had a 2012 with 5300miles on it, and it was a 5spd. and the color I wanted when I started looking for an XB before I got this one. At the time I couldn't find one with a 5spd anywhere. Anyways, I think this will actually work out financially if they give me what mine is worth on trade in, so I might actually look into trading mine in on that one. I don't know if I have the wife sold on it yet though, as I'd have to teach her to drive stick to be able to drive it, and shes been driving her explorer for quite awhile now and would like something new, although we just paid it off and thats nice:)

When you don't have a hard failure, always ask to drive with the tech to show them the noise. This will eliminate the 'could not duplicate' problem.

Well, I solved my problem, I traded it in on a used 2012 with only 5400miles on it. At the same dealer that told me nothing was wrong with my car to boot:) Its Army Rock Metallic with the 5spd., exactly what I wanted when I was looking and bought my 2011. At the time I couldn't find any new or used with the 5spd., and there was a shortage of new once due to the Tsunami that hit Japan. I didnt' have my old one for quite a year yet and this new one is only costing me be an extra $7 a month between the cost of the car and the insurance, so I think I did half descent. Mine soon needed tires, this one should be good for a couple years yet. I'm hopping to get a long life out of the 5spd. on this, I think toyota's transmissions are usually pretty durable. We shall see.
