Most mid-end and some high end Sony LCD TVs use Samsung panels.
My 40" Samsung LCD is great, and has been rock solid for the past 3-4 yrs.

LG and samsung are 2 of the major 5 LCD panel makers in the world AFAIK. Most other brands use panels from them in their LCD TVs.
 
I guess it's all in the luck of the draw. I had a Goldstar TV (Alabama made) that lasted 15 years but it was a CRT. Have a Samsung Plasma 40" for four years now and it still works as it should. The free Samsung DVD player that came with it as an incentive to buy still works. The first DVD player I ever owned, an RCA, still works. It was ridiculously expensive back then. The current Samsung cell phone is the best I've ever owned and I've had quite a few since the Motorola brickphone.

Now GE appliances? Just plain awful, DO buy the warranty you'll need it.

Meh... it doesn't change the fact that Goldstar turned into LG after it was merged with Lucky. Add two junk companies together, and what you get is one big junk company, not TOTALLY DIFFERENT, IMO.


I guess LG is just like Audi/VW: Sophisticated, innovated, but have trouble with reliability...but people still buy them.

You should do some research. FYI: Samsung engineers many Sony TV parts. LG and Samsung are number 1 in the world for a reason:

Read Consumer reports and they will tell you about LG and Samsung's picture quality. Not just Tv's but almost every electronics they make.

Actually Samsung picture quality seems to generally be better overall with Panasonic plasma sets way out pacing the rest in overall picture quality.

LG is usually a middling brand when I research them on CR.

Look at the top of the line set from each manufacturer. Now tell me which one is more expensive? Also take into account that there are typically deeper sales/higher discounts offered on LG and Samsung.

LG and Samsung are #1 because they deliver the most attractive price/performance ratio. What I was saying is that Sony and Panasonic have more upscale brand image/identity and are therefore priced accordingly, kind like Toyota vs Lexus.

I'm well aware of Samsung's picture quality. The last TV we bought was in fact Samsung for two reasons: picture quality was great and it was less expensive than Sony and Panny. That was a year ago or so. Things may have changed. I haven't been following too closely.

LG and Samsung are the Hyundai of electronics. It's just another South Korean company that has increased the quality of the products they are producing.

An 80's Samsung/LG TV or VCR was probably on par quality wise with an '87 Excel

Five years ago I bought a Philips 50" plasma for about $2600. I was an idiot.....but back then it was a pretty unique purchase. Today you can get that for less than half. Anyway, the TV has turned out to be junk. Almost every time I try to turn it on I get a series of red blinking light as the screen goes black. Looked it up on the internet and found how it's a very common problem for these sets. Apparently they used some cheap darn circuit boards or something that start to go out from three years onwards! A repair would cost several hundreds at a shop....if I want to try it (I'm not good at this stuff....so I wont) I can order the part and fix it myself for less. My point is this....WHY in the world would I ever buy another Philips TV when it does THIS kind of garbage after spending so much money? I won't....that's for sure. They should be ashamed of themselves for producing a product like that. Now I buy the best price out there with the most basic features that get's the job done (and is rated well on the various websites for quality). I ended up getting a Dynex (makes TV's for other brands as well). Had one for two years and it's been real good.....got another for a vacation home. Cheap? I don't know. Not according to what I've read. But who cares. Seems no matter what you do you can lose anyway.

And when a chemical company (Lucky) and its electronic subsidiary (Goldstar) merged, where do you think the electronics part of the business come from?

And most importantly, where do you think the people (management in particular) who work on and make the decision to produce junk go to afterward?

If you don't change the people, no matter how many merger and name change, it is still the same company doing the same thing.

The better brand names give you some hope of reasonable quality, but even that is no promise, the problem is the shoddy Chinese manufacturing, and questionable business practices that are a daily fact of life there.


Like others said if you manufacture in China you have to QA the heck out of them, usually by hiring a permanent crew of engineers and technical staffs on site.

Also a lot of the bad products are poorly designed and components poorly sourced, and no matter where you build your products, poor designs with poor components will still be junk.

The problem is really with the components. LG and Hitachi has a JV making optical drive products and they were low quality, even before the merger Hitachi's CDROM/DVDROM for Dell never lasted more than a couple years.

If I were to get better optical components, I'd get Toshiba as their DVD burners tends to be the best in quality.

3 year old LG CD-DVD Burner in my desktop used everyday, no problems. Hitachi-LG and TSST (Toshiba-Samsung) both make decent drives.

It's not the same company. Goldstar(LG), like most Korean brands, went from being a budget, cheap-o brand to a world player. Only a fool would think LG is some budget brand. Most of their products are rated high.

If you don't think LG has made itself a premier brand in the appliance market, your wife probably has not yet bugged you to update the kitchen yet :-) LG came out of nowhere and decided that they wanted to grab a portion of high end of appliance market. Go compare the prices of GE, Whirlpool, Amana, Fridgidair versus Bosch and LG.

Actually, GoldStar's been making appliances for a long time, but it's true, they've become a serious player in that field now internationally. Same goes for Samsung.
