Anyone here own any? What do you think of them? I am looking at new washers and dryers and LG comes up alot but they aren't really old enough to have a track record.

Our washer and dryer from LG is four and a half years old. They were not cheap (this is when LG first came out and front-loaders first became the rage so it was a near-top of the line pair), but they have very few parts to break (other than the pump on the washer) and they still run like they are brand new.

I talk regularly with the owner of the store we bought them from, and they are also the LG service contractor for about a 90 mile radius. He has said that they have had no problems with them that weren't caused by misuse and he is a pretty straight shooter, so I would take his word on that. He is also a Whirlpool dealer and he said that he pushes the LG line over Whirlpool's now due to reliability.

The misuse/pump issue is if you put a pair of jeans in with a pocket full of loose change or small objects the pump tends to eat them and then the pump digests itself. This may have been corrected since then, but on the ones we bought it was an issue the salesman mentioned up front.

I have heard that Whirlpool and Maytag have been having reliability problems of late especially related to the circuit board controllers, which in most modern washers and dryers has a fair bit of work to do.

LG televisions at least, are re badged Phillips. And that is not a good thing when I was researching plasma and LCD reliability figures. Phillips doesn't score highly with their sets. Not sure on LG appliances though.

I always though LG was GE. As far as Phillips TV, I has to toss out one that was only 7 years old, and am aware of their current track record. I ended up with a Westinghouse LCD, I liked them for a while, but have no idea about reliability.

LG TVs are not rebadged Philips.

LG and Philips have a joint venture to produce LCD panels, but the rest of the TV is made in house.

For example, some Sony models of Bravia actually use a Samsung panel, but the rest of the TV is Sony.

Purchased a new LG front load washer/dryer set just last September with no problems whatsoever. The set was purchased at Sears and the experience from the saleperson there said they had fewer issues with the LG models than compared to the Kenmore models.

FYI...if you have a Sears available and can wait a bit, I've recently found a site called swapagift.com. You can find unused or remaining balances of giftcards for sears at a 12% saving to the card value. Wish I would have found this sited before I purchased all of my appliances over the past couple of years.

A lot of those Kenmores are built by Whirlpool which could be the source of the problem. The place we got ours is also the Sears repair contractor so they see a lot of hardware.

Had lousy service from their phones. Poor reception unless near a tower.

Am interested in hearing more about appliances though. May also be in the market before too long.

If that clarifies anything for you.

CR rates Whirlpool as poor for reliability.

Anyone own Fisher and Paykel stuff? It gets rated very good also.

I'd prefer to buy American, but I put reliability and efficiency above country of origin, except Haier. USA made is certainly in the equation though.

LG cell phones in my experiences are not great for reception. Samsungs are software glitchy but good hardware. Sanyos are variable but when I was selling them we had very little trouble with them except the "ruggedized" models which weren't very rugged at all.

I like Motorolas but they have their own peculiarities. I go through a phone a year on average.

I have heard bad stuff about LG everything except their appliances (not including microwaves.)

Their TVs are okay value for money wise and seem pretty solid now.

Pablo,

Name some, please.

My wife and I were sucker enough to "buy American" with our purchase 8 years ago of a Maytag Neptune front loading washer ( and dryer). I take care of what I own and not just my vehicles.

Regardless of my care for items, that washer has been serviced more times than a San Diego hooker when the Fleet's in port!

The circuit board went bad, first of all. When the serviceman replaced it, I noted "made in china" on the board. I also noted numerous other parts stamped with "made in china."

So the next time this thing goes "belly-up," LG or similar for me!

Yes I helped Maytag "go to China". Neptune burned the house down. I should have hung the phone up on those people.

My Maytag washer is 20 years old and works like a champ. I would maybe consider a top loader from them if I could validate the design.

I would buy a Whirlpool before I would buy an LG.

I also have an old Maytag washer and dryer that are at least 20 years old. Knock on wood, they are still working great.

Any Goldstar microwaves I've seen have performed well - and I bought my current Kenmore is a rebadged Goldstar and it's been durable for ~8yrs.

Our GoldStar microwave has been reliable but it just doesn't match up with the quality of a Panasonic.

Isn't most Kenmore Elite product actually made by LG or Whirlpool? There is a reference guide for it somewhere online, usually seems to be one or the other.

I have a Kenmore Washer and Dryer and it's been 20 years and not a single problem with it. Not one!

OT....why the bagging on LG TV's? I have the LG 71 inch PY1M in my home theater and its a great set. Better than the 50 inch Pioneer Elite Kuro I have in the Family room. I spend considerable time on avsforums which stands for audio/visual/sound and they hold the LG brand in high regard.
