Letting Oil Drain Overnight

I let mine drain for at least a week. Seriously….why not figure out a way to flip the car over and get every last drop out

Obviously you want a good drain, you want to do it hot, oil dipstick up, you also supposed to remove the oil filter, before putting the drain plug back in, because sometimes more oil will come out of the sump, never seen that happen.. I've done thousands upon thousands of oil changes in my career.. and probably then some LOL

Not amateurs but wise. Going underneath is also an excellent time to look for problems which is not experienced by the "pumpers". Most filters are changed underneath as well so what is gained by pumping?
+1 … The only top filter vehicle I have does Jeep things and as a minimum I need to dig out some crud …

I usually let it sit for about 30-60 minutes while I am busy looking at other stuff on the car or while choring, then filter and filler up. Funny last time our Element was done I did let it sit overnight as we got busy and just let it sit. I noticed it took about a 1/4-1/3qt more than it's normal 5qts for the refill. I have noticed before on a oil pump that sat for awhile after being pulled still had oil in it several days later so I doubt they completely drain. I normally don't fuss w it and do it as time allows.

I always drain it hot. Really hot, like leave the car running, jack it up, put jack stands under it, break loose the drain plug, position the PIGS to protect the floor, drain pan in place, then shut the engine off and finish removing the HOT drain plug with my bare hand and craftsman tool CMMT14122. https://www.ebay.com/itm/2662099591...FcJnRrzzGSyoBbzN6IVlnVoA==|tkp:Bk9SR-rp_eOLYg
Greatest little tool since sliced bread. While the oil drains, I go in the house, shower and eat supper, sleep peacefully til am, then go out to a COLD engine, remove the filter, fill the new one up and finish changing oil.
On my vehicles (trusty GM 3800s), I have done the scientific method by testing, and when the oil stops flowing and starts dripping, I pulled the drain pan and replaced it with a 1500 ml beaker. Overnight, I get another 250ml of oil, which isn't that much, but in the am, I get to work on an engine cool to the touch anywhere.
Aside from all my OCD, my methods, madness, and reasoning are not subject to public opinion. Thanks for reading. :) :)🔥

That explains your title 😷

I don't have the luxury of unlimited time and projects need to be finished within a reasonable timespan

I do pull the filter and drain plug, and resume another project, or take a lunch. So, both are off for the time frame available, and I simply use 2 drain buckets.

My vehicles do drain for 30 minutes to an hour or so, or until I get back to it. I usually get a pretty good refill amount in that time frame, more than all the clowns complaining about dipstick levels, oil capacities, and their foolishness. Take a lunch, water the garden, walk the dogs, clean the gutters,..... I have an unlimited honeydew list which allows the vehicles to drain longer than the dealershipquicklubehacks.

Overnight, won't make a difference here since drain plug location in every vehicle I've owned is pathetic. I could drive the vehicle onto ramps the night before, and pull the plug in the morning. Its all the same to me and hot/cold oil all drains out. So, I have no need to drain overnight, don't worry about the temperature, and don't care being obsessive about it.

If the oil extractor works, I find that they'll pull oil out even more with the drain plug out, because of the previous mentioned lame drainplug locations on too many vehicles. So, that is a test for anyone to see which is more capable for oil removal. Not all engines are extractor tube friendly.

What I don't use is the quick EZ drainplugs that some install.... a way to drain even less oil.... no sillymoto drain plugs here.

5 minutes, 1/2 hour, or overnight is for you to decide. As soon as her car is up on ramps and I'm loosening the drain plug, she comes out and... 'needs to go shopping' 'run an errand' or 'pick/drop off someone' EVERY TIME, and its always an emergency even after stating the car will be down for an hour for some maintenance. I'll make her wait some, but don't give her enough time to flip thru the divorce lawyer section of the yellow pages.

You could drain it overnight, then take off the oil pan, and wipe it out , perfectly clean.🤔
I just used an oil extractor— sucked out every last drop in a Dodge 3.6.
