Anyone know who brews these Trader Joes beers?

it used to be made by SLO brew (San Luis Obispo) brewing company under the name steinhouse brewing (or something like that). SLO folded up, probably because of poor tasting beer in their latter years, and an owner with a big head. Firestone Brewing (of firestone wine and tires and "bachlor" fame) bought SLO's facility and now operates it. I don't know if they have the contract for trader joe's house beer, if it says Paso Robles, Ca on the label then it is brewed by them. they now own Humbolt brewing's recipies and make red nectar beer. if you can find red nectar it is certainly worth buying.

I did a little googling and it looks like Firestone does have the contract with trader joe's beers. it's brewed by "steinhaus" but that is just a trader joes contract name, nobody else sells it.

Nothing wrong with a contracted brew many are excellent beers. I have never seen anything from Trader Joes here in Maryland.

I have had Firestone Doubble barrel ale and it is one fine brew.

I did some Googling and the later posts in beer forums sy it's made by Gordon Biersch in San Jose. Nothing legally binding

Gordon Biersh is in San Jose and the reports said it tasted like GB. A decent beer, not outstanding, but better than Bud or Diet Coke.

TJ = GB

A little more conclusive

GB Brewery in San Jose

The GB brewery is on East Taylor Street. I've been by it many times taking my wife to the Japan Town farmers market.

Today's Ale: Chimay Grande Reserve
ponnounced She-May and brewed by the Trappist monks of Notre-Dame, at Scourmont near Chimay,Belgium. Chimay was the first Trappist Ale to be released to a greatful public and the first to use the Trappist name on bottles.

This beer pours with a thick dense tan head it is a dark spicy brew with hints of pepper. It has an ABV of 9% and is a great after diner beer or it would be nice with a slice of chocolate cake.

The monks that brew this suggest storing it for 2-3 years before drinking.

I forgot that they have two priviate label beers.
Steinhaus makes their ales such as fat weasel, jumping cow, etc.
trader joe's brewing company is gordon biersch (as you stated).
I don't really pay attention to either, I find them rather generic tasting and made for a pricepoint in a grocery store rather than being the best beer they can make.
I do like GB's martzen, but then again I like almost all martzens i get in my belly.

Todays ale: Delirium Tremens 9% ABV

Brewed near Ghent, Belgium This beer has a bright golden color and a large thick white head. A bouquet of sweetness, and a hoppy finish.

cheers.gif

This ale was not premited in the USA untill about 5 years ago just because of its name.

near where i live we have a micro-brewery and they make a beer called carolina-blond i think its an ok beer i just wanted to know if anybody out there as tried it and what the think of it?

Today's Ale: La Chouffe 8% ABV

La Chouffe is a Belgian Artisanal golden ale brewed with spices.

It has a peachey golden color, white head with small tight bubbles. It has a slighty sweet taste with hints of citrus. The bottle has a picture of a bearded gnome on it.

Hello Chimay,

I have tried Duvel (in the small bottles), and Rochefort #6, I was disappointed with both, maybe I just do not like the Belgium type of beer?
I do like some German beers, Hofbrau Original,
I had this when my wife and I went up to Frankenmuth, Michigan, for an overnighter and visit the local shops.
Hofbrau is one of the beers Bavarian Inn offers with their meals.
I do like some Samual Adams and a local brewery here in Michigan, Bell's Beer - Kalamazoo Brewery in Kalamazoo, MI.
Not sure but I think I like a beer a little more Hopsy then not, one of the most interesting beers I have tried so far was Two Hearted Ale by Bell's,
this beer has a wonderful fragrance, smells like a basket of flowers, my wife does like the taste of beer but she likes the fragrance of the Two Hearted Ale, if you can find some of this beer try it, I think Bell's is pretty much sold in Midwest, it may be distributed elsewhere in the country, the Two Hearted Ale does have a small bite to it in the end of a drink.
When I was younger, I liked Coors Lite but when I tried that lately, it was too watery and was like pop to me, alot of carbonation.

By the way, I was wondering, does Beer have carbonation naturally? or is that added in?

Hi Bill,

Sorry that you didn't like the Duval or Rochefort #6 Trappist. I hope you drank these from the proper glass and not from the bottle. In Belgium each beer has it's own glass. It really does make a difference.

I have not had the pleasure of tasting anything from Kalamazoo Brewing Co., but have read that they have a fine line of ales.

The Bell's sounds appetizing and thirst quenching. The Coors lite is ok for mass quantity drinking but for having a few fine ales never.
Some beers are naturally carbonated while most are not. Bottle conditioned ales where yeast and some times candy sugar is added to the bottle just before capping or corking are naturally carbonated and the these beers will continue to ferment for many years under the right conditions.

Happy beer tasting
Dennis

belgian beers don't sit right with some folks, sometimes even beer snobs. I think it's because they are a little "artistic" with their recipies. just look at the way lambic is made.

I couldn't agree more, as a matter of fact most people don't like them. I sometimes think of beer as I do a meal it has to taste good and to vary in flavors, nobody in my opinion can do that better than the Belgians. For most people lambics are a aquired taste and "may" be the oldest brewing method known after all they are brewed with wild yeasts.

I must be a beer snob because I am always looking for intensely flavored beers unless I am going to be drinking in mass quantity.

I do have favorites which vary from time to time like Most Trappist ales, and strong Golden ales.

I'm a generally fan of the darker german beers and the american microbrew intreptations of english ales.
dopple bock, porter, and stout are favorites. I also enjoy good real german martzen and lambic of all types.

Hi Chimay,

I poured the Duvel into a Tulip type of glass,
shaped like a wine glass with a curved lip at the top, I pour all of my beer into a glass,
I enjoy a beer more seeing the bubbles and catching aroma of the ale, the Duvel does foam easily.
Also, my second bottle of Duvel was better, the first bottle I had with Chinese food, that might not have been a good idea

The second bottle of Duvel, I made sure it was really cold, placed it into the freezer for few a minutes, do not know if that is the best way to cool off a beer, Duvel recommends serving their beer between 40° - 50°F.
I liked the Duvel more then the Rochefort, the Duvel appears a little more Hopsy, a brighter beer...

I have tried some dark beer, so far I have not found any that I would care to try again, the dark ones I have tried are less Hopsy, I think I prefer a brighter beer, if that is a proper way to say it.

Bill
