Thanks! My wife thinks I'm a bit silly for taking such good care of my Daily Driver - I wash it nearly every weekend, and I'm very particular about how it gets washed, etc. The way I see it, even a DD deserves to be take care of, and the better care I take of it, the longer it will last.

.. and yeah, the new Fusion Sport looks pretty great.

All the more reason to take car of it!

You certainly seem to be covering some ground. Best to have a good looking car on the road than one in the garage.....although those who are preserving a timepiece for the future civilization certainly deserve noteworthy!

My Roadmaster has rough paint, the rubber trim is falling off, and the wood grain is chipped in various places, and I wouldn't change or repair any of it. Washing it won't make it drive better.

Is that the original paint on your Camry?
I agree it looks about 5 years old, not 17.

Wow! That thing sure does look better than mine!

Thanks. Yes all original minus the pin striping. Liquid Glass has done all the protection work. Just finished it's spring routine in this pic. 2 coats of liquid glass, one week apart. Good to go until fall. The rear bumper paint is starting to show some signs of age, otherwise this Japan built Camry is very clean and rust free. I still don't know what that junk is on the driver mirror but there is no cleaning it.

Gave it the last bath it'll probably ever get. Doesn't look to bad cleaned up! 91 Festiva with 254k. Cancer plus all of it's problems it's pretty much done. Thought it was the wheel bearings but must be something in the manual trans, have a spare just not worth it. Also has a bad master cylinder as it looses pressure. I changed out the rear brake cylinder so at least it doesn't leak now. Dad will probably keep it around till he retires in a few years. His other is in good shape. Still runs great though!

My post from: "How reliable or unreliable are your vehicles?" -

"I'm going to skip warranty claims as they were growing pains, and they show no charge any way. I'm the second owner, the original owner had it serviced at the same dealer since new.

2004 VW Phaeton V8, excluding wear items and warranty claims, here it goes:

62,785 - 21 SEP 2009 - $60.15
. Rear sun shade switch trim replaced

72,626 - 19 APR 2010 - $559.66
. No start caused by break in wiring harness behind telescoping steering wheel.

88,570 - 05 MAY 2011 - $1122.93
. Replace wheel housing liner/low speed fan making a noise and speed below specification.

96,850 - 06 DEC 2011 - $477.80
. Replace window regulator.

106,811 - 22 OCT 2012 - $311.85
. Right rear quarter glass sunshade damaged.

110,691 - 01 FEB 2013 - $492.40
. Replace both front tweeters

112,314 - 18 MAR 2013 - $3561.15
. Replace front upper and lower guide links, upper wishbones, mounting brackets and sway bar links. Replace rear suspension upper links, lower links, and sway bar links.

114,436 - 04 SEP 2013 - $727.00
. Replace TPMS controller

114,771 - 18 SEP 2013 - $2945.54
. Engine out service for replacement of oil cooler union.

128,923 - 20 OCT 2014 - $1774.17
. Replace rear glass to correct defroster concern/replace drivers mirror for motor failure

130,705 - 19 JAN 2015 - $2482.61
. Right headlight adjuster failure. Replace left and right headlight, headlight washers, and all bulbs per customer request.

Obviously with wear and tear items such as brakes, tires, oil changes, etc the number would be high. This car has had every service performed on time or ahead of schedule.

Since taking ownership , I've done one DIY oil change and a paint correction. I have another oil change as well as a transmission and differential service lined up for my next trip home.

All systems are functioning as designed."

I love the car!

It happens with dealer parts and labor. I almost didn't include the control arm replacement in the reply as it was scheduled, and not done to necessarily correct a fault. Rubber bushings get old and the front end didn't feel as tight to him.

When the PO was my customer, we had a discussion on the merits of replacing the bushings vs the whole arm, with me pushing the bushing replacement only, as all the ball joints were still in good shape.

He decided against that and, well, several pieces of forged/cast aluminum with bushings and ball joints isn't cheap. In his eyes the cost difference wasn't enough and he wanted to be sure we wouldn't have to revisit the repair down the road.

He also decided to replace both headlight assemblies for a failed adjuster. A tech suggested a repair of the adjuster, but was again shot down in favor of two brand new assemblies. I bought the car from the right type of owner, to be sure. Never a corner cut or service skipped.

Performing my own labor will save me thousands, and more than make up for the parts cost in my eyes. The only thing I can't/won't do myself is an engine-out service, and on the V8 the only reason for this is the stupid plastic cooler union, which has already been replaced.

As always with cars of this caliber, you needs to go in with eyes wide open and a clear budget.

The day I brought it home:

It has since gotten a full detail inside and out and is in the garage until I return home again. It took about 18 hours total to get the paint and interior where I wanted it, but it looks as good as it drives now!

I also finally got everything together for the differential, torsen, and transmission service, so that and it's next oil change under my care will be handled on the next trip home.
