Whelp, last time I changed the oil on my pop's truck, I didn't oil the filter gasket. Today, I battled that filter for an half hour with a filter wrench. Normally I can get it off his truck by hand.

I had to take the rubber grip of the filter wrench and get a cheater pipe on it. I thought the remote oil filter mount was going to break loose I was hanging off the pipe with such force!

That's what probably happened to the filter on my dads truck. Had to mutilate the filter just to get it off...

Yeah, I had to drive a screwdriver through a filter once on one of my first oil changes to break it loose. Now I oil that gasket *every time*

I have had to do that a few times also. Come to think of it, it was before I started pre-filling my filters and oiling the seal.

A few weeks ago I changed the oil and filter on my 2005 Camry.
Oil was draing into its drain pan.....and I crawled under the car to take off the old filter.....that bugger was on tight. SOOOooo I went to get my filter wrench ( cup type ) THEN I REMEMBERED IT WAS GONE. I'm in the process of moving and it was packed and at the other home 150 miles away. I was screwed big time. There is no room on this little engine to get a screw driver to drive through the filter.....you can get your hand on the filter THATS IT. I live a remote area.....nearest Walmart or auto store 35 miles away....no neighbors either.
I have really really strong hands and arms but the filter would not budge after many tries....Then I hit my head on the sub frame , I was getting psssssd. That gave me the extra strength to twist that bugger off.....either the filter gave or I would have snapped the engine mounts LOL. GOT ER DONE.

Yeah ...several of our members (me included) have to be very careful of motor mounts ..and major frame structures for that matter.

I crank on the drain plug so hard the motor moves on my Dad's truck. For some reason, it has gotten a bit loose on a few oil change intervals, so I CRANK it on. I'd imagine I can't put enough torque on it to strip it though, sitting wedged under there. If the truck was on a lift and I could get good leverage on it, it would strip!

I've never had a problem with motor mounts. Usually the tires break away and the truck just spins round and round...

Remember the drain plug IS what holds the whole truck together...

No guessing with tightening the drain plug for me ... I always use a torque wrench and torque to the mid value of the manufacture's torque spec.

On this truck, with 225,000 miles, of which many have been on bad dirt roads (ie, the thing is falling apart), that may be true!
