Vertically mounted filter

Yesterday, while performing an oil change, i removed some generic filter from my dad's 1994 Nissan Quest and mounted a Wix 51361 onto it. The old generic filter was so tightly screwed that i had took quite a bit of force with a wrench to unscrew it.

When i mounted the Wix, i hand tightened it as much as i could, because i didn't have the wrench that would fit the Wix. The Wix is slightly thicker than the older filter. My question is: do you think that the Wix is mounted securely given that i hand tightened it?

Between, i had no intention of tightening the Wix as much as the older filter.

My experience has been that hand tight has been fine.

It should be tight enough just check for leaks.

Hand tight is preferred - just not "oily hand" tight

Since I have oily hands, I usually use a cup wrench to finish it. How many turns did you tighten it? As prescribed on the label? 3/4?

I don't recall exactly how many turns i tightened it, but i managed to get a good grip on it with both hands. Also, i had taken off the powdered latex gloves moments before i mounted it, so my hands were dry.

I always hand tight mine, no matter how it's mounted.

Hand tight works on any canister type filter I've ever installed. For some reason, the spin-on filter is like a drain bolt.....some people think it's a head bolt on a D9 Caterpillar.

The problem stemmed from "hand tight" being open to interpretation. "As tight as you can get it by hand" wasn't always read that way.

Filter man's responded by putting marks on some filters with a contact point and a rotation spec to a given mark after contact.

That said, this method resulted in some pretty tight installations since users had a hard time figuring the point of contact.
