I did my first oil change (2000 miles) on my 2009 Dodge Ram 1500 Hemi and used Mobil 1 5w20. I here a bit more drivetrain noise vs the factory fill. My question is would Valvoline synpower 5w20 or Pennzoil Platinum 5w20 give me less drivetrain noise than Mobil 1 5w20. By the way 5w20 is the recommended oil for my truck. TIA, Sal

Drive train or engine noise? Different oil and filters have been credited with quieting down engine noise.
I used the Napa Gold filters with the Mobil 1. I will try the Pennzoil Platnimum with the Napa Gold filter just to see if it was the oil or filter. I did hear on the Dodge forum that the use of a non factory oil filter can contribute to some valvetrain noise.
I had a brain fade a few years ago and tried a supertech filter. Everything was fine for a month or so, but one morning I started my Ford and I had lifter noise. Shuck me up. This continued for a few days until I replaced it with a MC filter and that took care of the noise. Filters can make a differance.
Try a different oil next time, could be the filter but could be the oil. Some vehicles are louder/quieter with certain oils.
Tig 1, I also have lifter noise on start up since the oil change. I thought the Napa gold filters have the silicone anti drain valve for cold starts which should prevent this.
In my '08 4.7, I had a somewhat loud valvetrain with Mobil 1 0w20. Switched over to Pennzoil Platinum 5w20 and the noise got worse. Now running German Castrol (0w30) and engine runs & sounds happier.
Since you can't switch fromk a 20wt oil (MDS), I would give Syntec 5w20 a try as it's one of the thickest OTC 20wt synthetic oils.

A Wix/Napa Gold fiilter should not be causing any noise for you on the 5.7L. Probably the Mobil 1. Very common for Mobil 1 5w30 to increase engine noise but I will say I haven't heard that the 5W-20 does it as much. Try PP, Synpower, or some Kendal GT1.
BTW - on which Dodge Forum are you hearing that the 5.7L is sensitive to filter brand? I have been on the main Dodge forums, and the HEMI forum, since the 5.7L first came out and have not heards that at all. There have been cases where a filter failed up( bad ADBV )and caused noise but I had never heard that the 5.7L was filter sensitive? Not doubting you just want to know so I can read up on it. Truly never heard/read that even once since 03.
I have used K&N, Royal Purple( 08 only ), MOPAR, and Hastings oil filters on my 5.7L Ram's( 04 & 08 )and never had any noise related to the filter. On my 08 I ran PP after swapping out the FF oil this past winter, with a MOPAR filter, and the temp got pretty cold( -16 )with no startup noise. I am now running RP 5W-20 and an RP filter on the 08 with no noise issues at all( not even the tick ).
It is a shame you are having these noise issues on the new truck.

I also have that dreaded hemi tick, my cousin just bought the same truck over the weekend and he also asked me about the tick in the motor, I told him it was normal. I am going to change the filter and oil toady and let you guys know tonight. Thanks for all the replies.
Ran 10W40 Valvoline in my wifes 97 Jetta. That pretty much made the valve noise disappear. Before that I ran 5W30's with a stock filter...it always had noise. This time im running GTX HM 5W30 and a Mobil 1 filter...no noise. It could be a combination of the two or just the filter making the noise....either way its running like a sowing machine now.
The "hemi tick" is quite common on the 5.7L. I can hear it (sounds like a loud fuel injector to me) whether I use Mobil 1 5W-20 or Motorcraft 5W-20 (synthetic blend).
There are all kinds of discussions about it on lxforums and chargerforms so it wouldn't surprise me if there are also a lot of conversations about it on the mopar truck forums as well. The usual dealer response seems to be "that's normal." Personally, it doesn't bother me.
