My brother owns a 01 Beetle 2.0. I posted a UOA awhile back. He ran Mobil 1 TD 5W-40 for 9,000 miles. It had to use 2 extra quarts of oil for burn off. The UOA came out great.

This OCI, he used Valvoline Maxlife 10W-40. The car only burned 1/2 quart in the 5,000 mile OCI. It usually burns through a quart by this many miles.

He will be using Pennzoil Ultra 5W-40 for the next two OCI's. He received two free cases of this stuff!

I told him after the Pennzoil runs out. He should try Castrol High Mileage 10W-40. It has a cst of 16.0 @ 100c

It might be better to stick with one oil; if the Maxlife gives good wear numbers stick with it. Jumping from one brand to another every oil change prevents you from determining which oil is best for the engine as it takes at least two OCIs to establish wear patterns based on that oil. The first change will still contain the previous oil's properties.
Just my $0.02

Yep! He receieved his free case, and I sent him the free case I received from Shell.

Just changing your oil choice can cause oil loss sometimes. Even going back to a conventional for 1 change when you had been running synthetic can cause more loss.

If he used a different oil than the Mobil 1 for 1 change and it lost those 2 quarts in that single oil change, the next oil change may have lost less than 2 quarts.

I have heard of weird cases where you can lose oil from switching to the craziest combination.... such as i lost more oil when i was running PYB after running Penn Ultra for the life of the car.
