I am looking for a powerful but compact LED work light, to use under the hood, and under the vehicle. The "traditional" work light that accepts a 75W incandescent bulb is the right size, but the light output is woefully inadequate.
Want it to be powered by 120VAC, and not by a battery. Any ideas?

Something this size and shape would be usable:

I use this guy. Better than the sears one before it, which broke.

Bright enough I can shine it on something I'm welding, and kinda see it through my helmet.

A few years ago I stumbled upon this by IKEA. Very long gooseneck, bright LED light, AC powered, avail in different base types.

I like the long gooseneck as I can bend it to suit + snake it into a dark area, where it will stay. Plus, it was only about $10. You could easily attach a few magnets to the base. I've used the one I bought endlessly. Love the long gooseneck.

Love that idea!

I bought a Snap-on hand held led work light from Costco about three years ago. It takes 4 AA batteries and it consumed so much current that it was like having an incandescent light with its short battery life. I used the light a few times and then gave up on it. Left a bad taste in my mouth about Snap on branded accessories.

That's a good idea. A big flood lamp to illuminate the engine bay. And then a smaller handheld to use under the vehicle and in tight spots for up close illumination.

But that EcoSmart LED flood lamp at HD gets some poor reviews for reliability.

I have a fluorescent plug in light I bought at Home Depot. It's their Commercial Electric brand. Just used it tonight. Worked great under the car.

I had a couple of the 20$(40$ retail) sears rechargable led lights

they were terrible. Battery life was extremely poor, recharge time long.. and not all that bright either.
Now I use an old style one with a 150w(equivalent) florescent bulb in it.

You do have to not break it.. but then again that was true with any old light bulb as well.

Might upgrade to an LED bulb if I ever see a decent deal on a high power one.

looks like this.

I have similar one for almost 30 years, I use 100W CFL equivalent.

Yeah Those are surprisingly useful. No complaints at that price! I should probably grab a few more.

Another option is an LED head light (I guess that's what you call it) that has an elastic strap that goes over your head. Those are pretty handy. Had a 3 pack from Costco. Knew I should've bought another while they had them.

Costco has Snapon brand work lights for under 50 dollars that are LED.

I got one for christmas last year and it is nice for propping it up to work under the car.

I should have stated that I am looking for a handheld version. Something like this one, that looks decent (but it gets mixed reviews):

You said the current 75w incandescent one is too weak, so some of the solutions above will not improve on that.
I like HTSS_TR's solution, but buy 2, and use the cheapest CFL ($1) or 60w-equivalent LED ($4 now) in both, for area coverage. No batteries to mess with. Cheap.
