Is it safe to leave auto-rx in the engine for more than 1,500 miles during the cleaning phase? I am on my second cleaning phase in my '99 Maxima as it has more than 100K miles on it. Would leaving the Auto-RX in longer provide for a more cleaning or will it cause damage?

The instructions say 1500 miles. However if you have a decent clean motor running it over 1500 miles is no problem. The 1500 mile recomendation is protection for you the consumer. For example in a real sludge monster, it is likely that the oil filter may be close to blinded and operating in the by pass mode in an extended mileage application. Many folks on the second cleaning merely change out the filter and run an extended cleaning cycle.

I would at least take a peak at the condition of the oil via the dipstick before driving on. If it looks real healthy, then you may extend the clean cycle. If it is jet black with poor looking properties, do yourself a favor and dump it.

I've read suggestions/recommendations (I think Frank made these but my memory ain't what it used to be) that if you are using synthetic oil in the cleaning phase of Auto-Rx you can- and perhaps should- go 2000 miles before the dino rinse phase. If your engine ABSOLUTELY requires synthetic oil in the rinse phase too then go 2500 miles on it before changing out.

Otherwise follow directions as written.

I just went 4k+ on the civic, no issues.
now entering the rinse phase.
and the galant, on it's second cycle, is at 2.8k on the cleaning cycle.
