Leaky downspout elbows

This is quite odd. What are your gutters made of?

Mine are all aluminum, with crimped elbows. They don't leak. I don't understand how/why you would have pin-holes in new flex-elbows?

As for a sealant, I'd recommend Sonneborn NP-1. I doubt the box stores carry it, but check. It's not silicone, but urethane. Bonds tenaciously (sp?) to metal, wood, glass, shingles, concrete, brick, etc.

I used this when I re-roofed my house last Summer.

Don't mess around. Get a lawyer. Get set to sue your contractor. Get him to remove all of the gutters.

You can't seal holes with paint. Forget sealant. You would think a professional contractor installing gutters would know. Small holes and he slaps paint? Paint over the problem? Where did he find these gutters? China? Where did you find the contractor?

Forget the sealant and replace the gutters.

From splashback inside the downspout getting between the joints? That actually could be the problem, now that I think about it. maybe I'll take a pic tomorrow. The brickwork on my house makes the downspouts kind of weird.

The length of the downspout (that's attached to the house) is determined by the length of the downspout (attached to the elbow). It has to be at the right angle and the end does not touch the ground. The "right angle" isn't a number it's just what looked right to me.

Drew, you can physically see holes in the elbow(s)??

That is highly unusual. Normally the leak is from the nipple the elbow attaches to, then water will run down the elbow.

Another common leak point is from the self tapping screw hole, the elbow is held in place with.

Bingo! That is it. I never thought a self tapped screw would cause a leak, especially on the "right" side of the elbow, but it does. The guy put the screws on the sides and top, but I guess enough volume of water will make even the top of the elbow have water flow, to where it can seep out of the screw hole.

Thanks guys.
