LCD Televisions

The best LCD's currently on the market are the top XBR's from Sony. If you want to confirm this, check the latest Consumer Reports-no one else does real comparison tests. Unfortunately Sony and it's competitors will not have hdmi 1.3 until next year, but they do have three hdmi inputs and are 1080P. If you buy a set that is NOT 1080P you are making a HUGE mistake. I would try to wait for hdmi 1.3 IF possible.

I would consider the Sharp Aquos model LC-37D90U 37" LCD. Sharp seems to make some of the best LCD TVs. It is 1080P if that matters to you. We are considering this for our new house.
I have found http://www.lcdtvbuyingguide.com/ but am not sure yet on its validity.
How did you narrow it to LCD TVs only? I am still going back & forth between LCD, plasma, & maybe some form of rear projection such as DLP.

HDMI is the successor to DVI. One thing that I have read about version 1.3 of HDMI is that it will allow you to switch inputs without having to "reboot". I have tried to verify that but can't find it, some maybe I imagined it. http://www.hdmi.org/

Big SONY fan here but for LCD I would vote for Panasonic, nothing comes close to them in terms of color richness and fidelity.

HDCI, High Definition Component Interconnect. Required for playing HD thru a Hi-Def DVD player (Blue-ray, etc).

1) It has video AND audio thru a single cable. VERY NICE!
2) A computer with a DVI-style video connector can connect directly to the HDMI-equipped HDTV. Audio will have to come from the computer's sound card. Still Quite Nifty.

I'm blown away at how many 720p LCD's are being sold nowaways. Looking at a Circuit City or Best Buy ad on Sundays shows very few 1080i/p sets. You'd think everyone would demand at least 1080i as they toss $1200 at a TV, but I guess not. Then again, so many people think that Pennzoil makes sludge.

I'm quite happy with my Sanyo 32" HD 1080i CRT-style TV for $577. HDMI and HDTuner built-in.

you would think so but people don't think, as long as it says the buzzword "HDTV" on it somewhere, out comes the credit card... they can't be bothered to look at the details - as long as they think they are keeping up with the jones' then thats all that matters for most.

I occasionally walk by and look at the tv's in the various stores, but most look like utter ________, even the plasmas, maybe they don't hook them up right or something. There have been a few times when I went "wow", might have been HDTV LCD...

After seeing the new LCD's, Plasma looks kinda washed out. I'm still holding out - glad to do so as prices drop and performance increases.

The old Sony CRT TV is still working great!

Were the plasmas connected to the same source and calibrated correctly? Maybe the saturation on the LCDs was overblown? I'd recommend an Avia DVD for TV calibration, if you don't want to hire a professional to do it for you.

I'm the same way with buying a big screen myself though - keep telling myself that if I just wait another month, I'll get the same TV for $100 less or same price with more features. And so I'm still watching TV on an old 27" JVC. Actually in my case, finding the right TV stand is turning out to be more difficult than finding the right TV. The one stand I like costs $500 and I really have no space for it. Sigh...

I've been researching this issue too. I'm looking at 42" units. There are forums and review sites out there. Really, so much information that there is no way to know which is "best". I think you just have to find consensus on what is good by most reviewers. Plus, looking at 50 sets in a box store on the same source with none of them calibrated makes the decision near impossible. I don't think I'll be ready to buy until Feb/Mar though. HDMI 1.3 & 1080p would be nice though.
