I'm planning to upgrade my PC monitor (old, RCT style) which is giving up the ghost.

I'm looking at the the smallest (15") Dell LCD flat panel monitor for $171.00+tax (free shipping), direct from dell.com

My qusetions is: do those LCD flat panel monitors have the same analog "traditional" connector, with the many pins, that you screw on to the back of the monitor, which I've been using with my existing PC/Monitor?

or do they have some other connector which my existing PC (Compaq Presario 6000) doesn't have?

(I've heard that this particular Dell monitor has a "VGA" connector; is that the "normal/traditional" type?)

Would dbe grateful for any advice.
Thanks.

Yes the lcd has the same connector that the crt has, but then again it depends how old your system is whether or not it will plug right in without additional adapters.

My computor was bought in December 2002 ( i guess the LCD monitors were already out by then..)

Mine is a small connector (lcd) which is similar in size to the one next to it a crt. If not Best Buy should be right around the corner.

The blue connector is the standard VGA monitor connector. Only the very very early LCD panels required any adapters to work with a standard VGA out on a regular computer (desktop, workstation or notebook).

It will work fine. Enjoy.

The "upgrade" in connectors in a digital in put called DVI. Most DVI monitors are backwards compatible with the analog (standard VGA blue connector) so you could still get a Digital monitor that's expandle with a new system down the road. However, a digital monitor isn't an absolute must as their are plenty of very sharp analogs out their.

Dell monitors are usually a good value when purchased with a new system (bundled), though your price sounds good too. If you need just a monitor, I strongly recommend checking out newegg.com too. I've been building computers for a long time and this place has been always great. It's a top ten site for most hard core system tweakers.

The site is a no frills retail and OEM supplier. They focus on good inventory, the competitive pricing, fast shipping, and a excellent customer service. I just build a system for my house 2 weeks ago. An AMD Ahtlon 64 3000+ MHz system with 1GB of DDR 400 RAM for under $500 (I already have a monitor and the software).

No comment on the 15" monitors since the only LCD I own is a 19" Samsung 910, but a big thumbs up for newegg.

I just built a new machine and purchased most of the parts from them. Great pricing and fast shipping. I couldn't be more pleased...

Thanks for all you guys' help:

RAZL:

Thanks for the link for Newegg. read a lot about them, seems to be a great company;

What do you think about the Samsung T-153 monitor from the page-link you gave me? it had DVI, and costs only $195.
From what I've read online so far, Samsung seems to be a leader in LCD monitors.

Ca you take a look at it, and tell me what you think of it? (it's sort of in the middle of the page you supplied the link to)
(I'm very new to this area, and would appreciate your expert advice)

What attracted me was their 3 year warranty on ALL 3: labor, parts and backlight. most offer only a 1 yr warranty, especially on the backlight.

Thanks in advance.

I also have the Samsung 17 inch 712n LCD and its fantastic! I paid around $330 for it after rebates. You can get a nice 19 inch for about $420.

Newegg is a very good company. I have built a few through them.

Id suggest samsund LCDs, personally. I started out with dual 15" LCDs, then changed to a single 19". Also got one for a computer at work - that one has a DVI AND an VGA connector, and the neat thing is that you can hook up two computers to it direcly.

My father has a higher-end dell 19" LCD at work that is pretty good. I very much like the quality compared to the samsungs that I use (it may be a samsung monitor rebadged for all I know, especially since the quality is equal). However my experience with comapnies like dell, etc., is that their good stuff is good and at decent price, but their cheap stuff is REALLY lousy.

UPDATE:

Thanks to all who recommended Newegg.

I'm writing this on my new 17" Samsung Syncmaster 715 LCD monitor

The 15" monitor was sold out, but then I found a great "newegg launch special" on a 17" Samsung LCD for only $215 (no tax/free shipping)! the sale was only for one day, and I went ahead and got it. (considering this is a brand new model, it's actually cheaper than the "old" 15" I was looking at)

All I can say is, it's superb; even with the factory settings, there are so many things you can adjust, I still haven't fooled with those.

My video card is handling it OK. but I might need a better one soon...

The delivery was actually a day earlier than I expected: very fast. Superb service from Newegg.

Thanks again!!!

The new Samsung LCD PVA panels are terrific. My Dell 1905FP uses a Samsung PVA technology panel and it's amazing. It has a near 180 degree viewing angle, with no color inversion off axis. It also uses 8 bits per pixel for full 24 bit color. Many cheaper panels uses 6 bits per pixel. I have it connected by DVI to a 6600GT nvidia card.

If you can bide your time and wait for a promotion, Dell have the best prices. My new 19" LCD was $275 shipped.

I love Newegg. They really treat clients really well. The prices of LCDs have gone down significantly! August of last year, I paid 320 shipped for a 17inch BenQ LCD. BenQ has high ratings too. The model I got has a high render rate or something so when I play games I don't get "shadowing." It does have one dead pixel but it doesn't bother me. It fits in my little space at school really well. Its awesome for projects that I do late night because my eyes don't hurt anymore.
