Lawn mower explosively disassembles

We've had two push mowers blow up.. the one I heard just made a pop that I could hear in the backyard from the front yard. The deck/motor combo is too heavy to propel it. I'd believe hitting something instead.

Nobody brought up the possibility of an Iranian IED. Nothing strikes fear in the heartland like exploding lawnmowers in Ottumwa Iowa.
Iowan here, can confirm. I'm also always strapped and on the lookout for any terrorists when out mowing.

The comments in Youtube say he hit an unexploded firework shell.
This i believe.

I had the displeasure of owning a cheap mower with an old briggs that started hard and seldom ran right.. once I had it's replacement I took it out to the gravel pit, put a pound of Tannerite under it and gave it an unceremonious funeral.. the one in the video looked an awful lot like mine, but it didn't go as high.

There was definitely and explosion underneath it, not the engine letting go.
When I was a young man I used to do that for a living. 😇
Yes, even if the whole blade snaps cleanly off the crank, I don't see it having enough energy to throw the whole mower up in the air like that, unless the mower was doing like 6k+ rpm?
Maybe he hit a serious shot gun shell? CO2 cannister? Not many small things have that much pop in them? Hit a large cherry bomb firework the right way?

Agreed.. It takes a lot of energy to launch a mower like that and I'm convinced that engine/blade don't possess enough energy to do that. Also, it looked pretty smokey (not like oil smoke either). I vote fireworks/tannerite, or as you suggested, maybe CO2? Possibly staged, but man.. you'd have to be half crazy to be willing to do that with your squishy human bits in such close proximity!

I was thinking it could be AI but there's just too much working man neighborhood detail everywhere you look. In the comments a pyrotechnical guy says a fireworks shell will do that. Guy sees the shell on the ground, thinks "what's that?" and runs over it.

So I watched it on YouTube and this pops up: Hold my beer....
