Lawn mower explosively disassembles

It was probably a Briggs & Scrap Em engine. All the ones I owned developed a rod knock. I did have a 1972 - 3hp Briggs that knocked for 20 years, and never threw the rod. Just burned tons of oil as it got older. Finally junked it in 2025. Was using more oil than gas. Got my money's worth out of that engine !

The comments in Youtube say he hit an unexploded firework shell.

I've had two mowers lock up when mowing and neither was anything like this. I had one lockup and throw a rod through the bottom when I was mowing my parents yard back in high school, and it did leap off the ground a few inches and make one hell of a racket, but nothing like this video. It had only started clanking about 5-10 seconds before doing this so I had very little warning. The other one I had lockup, all it did was suddenly slow down to barely idling, then just quit. When I tore it down, the rod was in probably two dozen pieces and the crank was scored beyond reuse but there was no violence or noise at all when it happened.

My high school girlfriend's father started up his mower at the beginning of the season in 1988 and about 10 seconds into it, it shot the piston, part of the rod and part of the head up against the side of the house. Wasn't quite the dramatic explosion of this video, but it was an eye-opener.

Small engines exploding rarely happen but when it does it is no joke. One fellow in a chainsaw competition had the saw explode. He was in critical condition. Lucky he was able to make it out alive.
