Does anyone know what would be a larger filter to use instead of a STP S16 or K&N 2004 on a 98 4.0 Jeep Cherokee? I have been using the STP S16 and K&N 2004 filters. For a larger filter it looks like a Ford filter like a PH8A might work. I guess at least screw on. I wonder if the drain back and releif valves are the same.

The ph16,43,8a,3600 and 3614 are basically the same except for the can and element size.

I believe that the bypass pressure on them is within 2-3 lbs of each other.

I tried the large 8a size filter (I ran a purolater 30001) on my 4.0 in my 02 jeep.

It really rattles untill it fills with oil and I felt that any improvment in filtration was futule since the bearing were banging around untill the pressure came up.

Infact I have switched from the large filter on my pickup to the small one for this reason. Plus I can now stock 1 filter for all of my cars.

You may consider staying with the smaller filter and going with the MOPAR coolant exchange oil cooler. It sandwiches between the filter and the block and you plumb the heater hose through it. I guess if you have the room ...use both. I have the cooler on my 2.5 02 TJ SE. Things are a bit more congested on the 2.5 in the filter area ..so I'm somewhat stuck with the smaller filter. For some reason they eliminated the wrong cylinders and the engines don't share everything (same filter naturally).

Larger filter shouldn't rattle.
Cheap filter or defective ADBV is the most likely cause.

I use the ST ST8A , and it doesn't rattle , all is fine. Have done so for for a few years now, always has been fine with no rattle, have no idea what he is hearing, but whatever it is it is not filter related.

I have had several jeeps with the 4.0 and I am using the wix 1515 filter. It is the same as a PH8a fram.I looked in the wix book and it has the same settings as the shorter 1085/Ph43 filter.I havent noticed any rattle on startup.I am using the 1515 filter right now on my '03 wrangler

Larger substitute for the Fram PH-16/AC-Delco PF-13/Purolator L14670/Wix 51085: Use the old "standard Ford" filter if there's room: Fram PH-8A, Motorcraft FL-1A. (Wix 51515?). There's also a full diameter, "in-between" length- Fram PH-43, Motorcraft FL-300, or equivalent.
