Larger EA15k51 on 2007 Toyota Corolla

Hello all,

just thought I'd get some feedback on this: the normal Amsoil EA15k filter for the 07 Toyota Corolla is the EA15k09 - I discovered that the EA15k51 threads in the same manner as the EA15k09, and all else equal, I assume a larger filter is better, especially for extended OCIs.

The filter is much larger and barely fit the physical dimension it was allowed in the tight space. It barely clears, but it does with no issues. Does anyone have any experience on whether or not it will seal, what the OEM Corolla oil filter diameter is, etc.? I just want to make sure it'll work properly.

Anyone have any input or experience on it?

I don't have any experience with your filter/car application but, I have oversized in the past with moderate success. Only one vehicle didn't seem to like oversizing and that's my current '04 Altima in my signature.

I would seem to get more so than normal startup rattle with oversizing! So, I just don't do it on this car. Or the others in my sig 'cept the '80 Firebird FORMULA which I do!

Thanks for the input! What do you mean when you say the Altima didn't like it?

I didn't notice any start-up rattle, I think I'm okay there. I just want to make sure it will seal, but I guess that's kind of hard to say.

How is this filter making a proper seal ???

The diameter of the larger filter looks WAY bigger.

It appears from the pictures that the rubber rings don't match up at all.

i think the old one was actually undersized, so it really depends on the car.. just not sure if anyone's tried this particular combo

I think that's mistake, too large on diameter, gaskets don't match. I tend to rely on the engineering of whoever made the engine, about the oil flow circuit, but longer is fine if everything else is identical.

From my experience, the mating surface where the gasket meets the block does not leave a lot of room for upsizing.

The gaskets have to match almost exactly.

Thanks for the input all. I'll figure out what the diameters are and exactly what's going on. From the pic of the filter installed though, it looks fairly close to sealed all the way.

If you have the 1ZZFE engine - like I do on my Vibe... the Motorcraft FL-400S looks just as wide and worked fine when I used it for 5k miles.

You have a 1ZZ-FE like I have in 4 different cars.

I used a 05 Lexus is3000 oil filter since it was oversized, it took A LOT of over tightening then normal to get it to finally be leak free.

00-02 celica gts & 06 camry have the same gasket dimension oil filters as the 1ZZ-FE but the filter is longer, it's the perfect oversized filter to run for your application

Looks like the stock is 2.685", what I had before was 2.625", and what I put in is 3", so about 0.3" longer in diameter than the recommended spec. How will I know if it's sealing fine, or if it's too big? As far as I can tell, it seems to seal just fine - a touch big yes, but sealed all the way around.

i figured more filtration media compared to a smaller oil filter, all else held equal. for extended oci (15-20k miles), i figure every bit helps. also, slightly more oil capacity

the only "negative" i've heard from someone (aside from potential fitment) is that less air flow around the filter can result in hotter oil

is there any significance between the 6 holes on the new one vs 8 on the other?

1zz-fe and 2zz-GE oil filter mount has a lot of open space to fit bigger filter. I use a Mobil 1 m1-209

that's what it looked like from the pic - 2.9" would probably be a perfect fit. looks like m1-209 has OD as the one I got, so if it works for you it'll probably work for me. thanks

No thank you. This is something I don't feel comfortable changing. I'll let the OEM decide what filter size to use. Hope it works out for you though.

A lot of people use the m1-209 on the those Toyota engines mostly the lotus people use it too.

+1 Possible gain?.....negligible. Possible loss?.....catastrophic. It's risk - reward. Hey, why stop at red lights? The odds are you won't hit anything.
