Hi all. Was wondering if anyone knows what oil can be used as a suitable substitute for this transfer box oil.

Google brings some oils up but they are still generally over £20 a litre.

If the transfer case metal in your LR is proprietary and made of unobtanium go with the expensive stuff. Over here in the colonies lots of the Japanese branded SUVs use something like this.

Forgot to mention it currently has a leak from the casing seal, the casing is in two parts and uses sealant rather than a gasket so I’m trying to find a oil that is suitable to use until I have time to remove the transfer box and re seal it.

Oh, that's the Shell TF0870 gear oil, same as Cayenne TC and BMW X-Drive TC amongst others.

Here's some recommended oils for TF0870: Ravenol DTF-1, Motul DCTF, Redline MT-LV, Triax DTF1 as mentioned above, Rock Oil TF0870, and HPL 75w.

Any idea what’s in the oil that makes it special. Like you say the TF code gets listed against the advertised oils but I’m not seeing a reason why it’s so, In my opinion, expensive.

Once the case leak has been fixed I will most likely get some genuine LR oil which as far as I’m aware is from Shell but whilst it’s leaking it doesn’t make sense to buy such oil if a cheaper alternative is available.

Also the motul DCTF fluidly looks like it’s for fuel clutch transmissions? Is this fluid definitely compatible?

If you google TF-0870 you'll get a bunch of hits because it's the same fluid used by BMW.
I used this in the X3. Ordered from Blauparts.com

The transfer box is leaking so until it’s fixed I’m trying to find a suitable oil to keep it topped up with thats hopefully on the cheaper side.

Suggest you try Rimmer Bros or ATO24. Most members are in the US and can't help you with lower prices.

It might be the way I’ve been wording things, I want to know what are the properties of the oil? Simply put, is there any difference between the TF0870 spec and a standard oil like Castrol transmax for limited slip diffs. Or something like what was noted earlier about the Motul fluid crossing over to DSG application.

If one of these could be used (the Castrol or DSG oil) then that would resolve the cost issue.

The TS0870 must have a specified viscosity. Once that is known I would thinks it’s a case of what is suitable for use with a locking differential.
