hello, i found this forum after googling oil. i found the older thread about the guy with his wife's murcielago and he had an enzo.

anyways, i thought i would start a new post, and see if there were any new suggestions.

i am not an oil expert at all, but i am obviously a car guy. i'll be doing the oil change soon. and i'll try to follow this sticky:

1. What kind of vehicle you have

2002 Lamborghini Murcielago, 6.2 liter v12 with about 12k miles on it. The last oil change was about 16 months ago, at around 9k miles.

2. What your owner's manual says -- not just viscosity, but certifications (look for acronyms like API SM, ILSAC GF-4, etc.) and change intervals as well

I dont have the manual in front of me. But I believe the factory fill is Agip of some kind. Intervals are usually recommended at every 1 year, since these cars dont get many miles put on them.

3. Where you live

4. How you drive (easy? hard? fast? slow?)

the car is used only occassionally as a fun car. it gets driven reasonably hard occassionally, but first gear is good for over 60 mph, so you can't get on it too much, or you will go to jail quickly.

5. What your daily drive is like (short trips? long trips? city? highway?)

only occassional weekend drives, usually woudl drive somewhere 1 hr away, then 1 hr back.


6. Whether your car has any known problems

no problems.



right now, i am leaning towards mobil 1. i guess i can order Agip, from Agip USA in NJ i think. i dont know much abotu other oils.

You and AE Hass make me cry. This is off topic, but 60mph in 1st gear. I'd crush so many people at Englishtown..

I believe AEHass used Mobil 1 0-20/5w20. He has a very lengthy article about oil. Not sure if you read it yet

Keep in mind that not all agree with the lighter is better oil recommendations of Dr. Haas (the guy with the Lambo and Ferrari(s)). Also refer to his use of the vehicle and compare that to how you might drive your car.

Personally I would go for a high end ester-based oil in the correct weight for your car. Oil cost is minute fraction compared to the investment of the car so might as well spring for the best IMO. This would also let you err on the side of having too much protection rather than too little, for those times of hard driving.

If you 'like' M1 products, I think M1 0W-40 is what you want. Another option would be TDT 5W-40. Both easy to get, stout oils.

If you want to get 'adventurous', you might want to try and track down the brand-new Pennzoil Ultra 10W-60; which is made for Ferrari's. THAT would be an interesting oil to find/run/UOA...

wow, some quick replys over here. i'll try to read those AE Hass articles when i get a chance.

that hass guy is in another league than me though. i think he bought his new and he has an enzo. thats a whole different ball of wax. i buy my cars when they are depreciated because i am a cheap [censored].

hence, i am doing my own oil change. i just ordered the parts. oil filter = $55. 2 crush washers and one rubber plug = another $40. so $95 for an oil filter (just regular screw on type, 2 crush washers, and a rubber plug. ha!

i have the manual at home. i'll check to see what it says specifically.

i used to live in west orange, nj! i know englishtown well! i have done auto x's in that parking lot, made a few passes down the 1320, and have even ridden on the dirtbike track. it was a long time ago though, pre-lambo.

You're garage is small, and your cars are junk...

I can't even type that with a straight face. Great collection, and I really like the clean garage.

Get your hands on an owners manual and use whatever they reccomend. I'm not typically a fan of saying, "get the best of the best" but for the simple cost of an exotic car, it sure couldn't anything

You didn't mention the factory recommended grade?
I believe it is 0W-40 and/or 5W-40.
I'd lean toward the 0W-40 for it's lower start-up viscosity; the brand is of secondary importance.

Since you don't track your car you could run a 0W-20 like Ali Haas does and in theory acheive better lubrication protection when the oil temp's are below 80C but I doubt you're going to be that anal in watching you oil temp's. Besides, I don't think you'd want to deviate from the recommended oil for warranty compliance reasons any way.

What you could do is run the lightest oil that complies with Audi's spec's for your car and I'm sure Dr. Haas would give you the thumbs up for that approach. And by the lightest oil I'm referring to the oil with the lowest 40C viscosity spec' which you can get from the Product Data Sheet (PDS) info' all major oil companies provide. It may take some research on your part but it will be educational in the process.

Redline 5W40 would be the best match for Murcielago on the 1 hour drive trips. If the car is driven mostly short trips at less than 10 miles then Redline 5W30 would be better.

I need to play with those toys! Ever since I was a kid I wanted a Lambo and as an adult I want a Ruff Turbo Porsche. My wallet and my job say Pinto, my heart and soul scream Lambo!

With AEHass' articles, be sure you take your time, its a very good read. Takes time to digest but he has it out there in simple terms. Depending on what your going to do with a car you can use a variety of different oils so long as they comply with the API rating.

Nice view man! Good options have already been suggested. A quality 40 weight like M1 0w40 or TDT, RT6, 300V, etc. But check your manual and follow what it says... to a degree

Or driving the car at highest performances or high ambient temperatures requires the use of Agip Racing 4T 20W/50

Then for the way you're driving it and your location, this is the oil I would use-

If you like to try Mobil 1 then 0W40 is a good choice, if you don't mind order oil online then Redline 0W40 or 5W40 will be the right oils. I would stay with synthetic oil with HTHS above 3.5 for the 1+ hour trips.
