I look at my UOA data in this way - for the wear metal results, this is measuring how my engine is wearing, not oil to oil comparison or how well one oil is performing vs. another (which is what is preached by yourself and others w/r to UOA use here ad-nauseaum).
I don't preach that UOAs are good for "
oil to oil comparison or how well one oil is performing vs. another" in a vacuum of parameterless bounds; that is a misleading statement of what I've said repeatedly over the years here and elsewhere. Here is what I "preach" in a snapshot:
- I believe that UOAs can be used as tools to judge one product, process or equipment against others
IF AND ONLY IF proper micro-analysis is done (which it rarely is because of time and money being the limiting resources affecting most individuals)
- I believe that UOAs can be used as tools to judge a product, process or equipment relative to others in macro data to understand normality
In your case, it appears to me that you do a very good job of tracking the wear data. My concern is that other people looking at your data are going to come to conclusions about individual products (lubes) based on very small sets of data; this is the classic mistake so many make. Your data is conducive to macro-analysis, but it is not applicable to micro-analysis due to the small sample sizes for each lube.
So my comment overall is...why bother then with UOA beyond coolant in your oil? For all the folks that post amazing long-run UOAs...they are actually meaningless then?
UOAs are not meaningless by any means. They are value-driven tools to understand wear trends, contamination, and lubricant health. But like any tool, they can be either used properly with the understanding of the benefits and limitations of the tool, or they can be misused in a variety of manners which result in very bad conclusions.
Succinctly put, I don't think there's anything wrong whatsoever with what you're doing.
I think many people will look at your data and come to bad conclusions because of a misunderstanding/lack of proper analytical methodology.
