Less use of a/c?

Not quite, it was still in the upper 80's to mid 90's. I assure you it was on High.

Take the same pic every 500 miles. Then after a drain when its clean. 2k should do it. Maybe add a slight bit more for evaporation

I went with the 3oz per quart recommendation from one of the earlier posts. The car only holds 3.4 qts and you don't dare go over 3.4 because it causes issues.

That is correct. The 16oz recommendation is based on a 5qt sump. I just rounded it out to 3 oz.

I was going to mention that I did not put any Kreen in the fuel because Toyota strongly urges you not to, reportedly because the Prius has a Bladder fuel tank. Anyone know anything about this or can explain a little more clearly?

Yes, I have heard of the "bladder" fuel tank.....from the old "Acetone in Fuel" wiki-site.....can't remember the URL......but apparantly a Prius owner had that "problem" when they (likely, over-)dosed their Prius fuel with acetone.....

Sort of off-topic, but does anyone know what's actually in Kreen? Is their an MSDS to divulge? I know it's super solvent.....but so is Berryman's B-12 CHEMTOOL......and it's only $2.17 for a 16 oz. can that is capable of treating 30-40 gallons (or 1 oz. per gallon of fuel).

Then again, on the other hand, B=12 CHEMTOOL "had" crankcase use directions on their can (believe it was 6 oz. for 4 cylinders, 8 oz. for 8 cyclinders or something.....) which have been "removed" (likely due to lawsuits of blown engines....)....but there are still "old timers" using B-12 in the crankcase as "previously" directed

Without problems....

Here is the photo that I took yesterday 9/3/12 after 1K miles with the Kreen. I did an oil change right after this. I want to run the car for a few days to confirm that the car has stopped burning oil so I did not re-dose at this time. I will re-dose in a week. By looking at the pictures the varnish didn't change much but it does look cleaner in person, hard to explain that but it does. The lifter tick and the varnish that was on the end of the dipstick is definitely gone. The oil that I drained was extremely dark, much darker than a normal oil change would have been. I suspect it may have been a little darker if not for the Pure One oil filter...i don't know.

Thanks for getting back to us, please keep doing so. Not seeing any real difference through the fill hole yet, too bad we're only seeing a tiny part of the engine.

You are seeing about the same effect I have in my Nissan.

I don't think cleaning up some varnish is Kreen's strong point. The Kreen turned my oil the same color as the varnish IMMEDIATELY. But it hasn't gotten any darker no matter how much more I add to the crankcase.

But in my sludged up K1500, that's another story.

I keep thinking about this car and the effectiveness of the Kreen after 1k. This is a hybrid and by design the engine probably runs only about 2/3rds the time a regular engine would run. This leads me to believe I may need to increase the "Kreen run time". Also we are looking at the top end of the motor that gets the least amount of lubrication and flow. That would probably affect what we see. The dipstick is an entirely different story. It was caked in varnish and now is clean as a whistle. I will stick with it and see what happens.

I also believe that's a splash fed area from the looks of it. Same thing on our old Corolla, all you can see under the oil cap is that piece. I ran many cleaners through that engine, it took thousands and thousands of miles to see some deposits/varnish to start dissolving.

Are you referring to the pic of the stick posted on 8/20, or a different stick?

Am I missing something here, I see a slight film-?

Yes the picture from 8/20. It was more than a slight film but oddly wasn't the coffee stained color of the varnish in the top end of the motor though it does appears to be the same thickness, if that makes sense. Since I cannot effective check the thickness of the varnish inside the motor I have to rely on my sight in an admittedly tough to access location. In the picture of the dipstick it looks all 1 color, but in person it was about 3 different shades. In the middle of the picture you can see where I scraped off the thickest area (on one side only) just to satisfy my own curiosity. I didn't expect the Kreen to work over night if at all but I have been happy with the results. Since I changed the oil last week I checked the oil once again to see how much it had burned so I could add the second dose of Kreen, but it had burned very little. I may have to drain a small amount of oil to add the second dose.

OK-how about an update----? we recently took posession of my FIL's 2004 Prius 78K miles 5K OCI via the dealer. It looks about half as bad as yours-which would make sense since it has about half the miles

We are still waiting to hit the mileage to change the oil again. We are trying to sell our house so I have been too busy to stay on top of it weekly like I was. I will post some pic's as soon as the oil change is necessary.
