I have a riding mower with a 7000 series Kohler engine. Last time I changed the oil I overfilled it. After draining I added the 2 quarts as that is what is specified in the literature I got with the mower. So drained and changed again today. Sure enough full on the dipstick with only 1 quart.

Does Kohler say to fully insert the dipstick or just to the bottom of the cap? That can make a difference on accurate measurements but that is a huge swing between 1 & 2 quarts.

I put the dipstick all the way in. It is marked with dots for full and low. I know I did it right . It is at the full level now and has been right at that level every time I checked it (every use for the last year). So two changes with same result. Also it is clear that there is no more than 1 quart in my drain pan.

Did you change the filter as well? Almost every mower with a v-twin takes 1.9-2.1 quarts with a filter change.
Changed the filter and the filter is very small. No way would it even hold a pint.

We will agree to disagree because mine has taken only 1 quart
When checking your oil I don't think you should screw the dipstick back in, you just place it on top. I'm guessing that is your issue. I often check mine sitting cold and it is well above the full line when I pull the dipstick. If I wipe it off and check by setting it on top it is right on "FULL"
Mine takes ~1.8-2 quarts depending on the filter. It is a 15hp in a JD LT150.

Thanks no screw on this yellow dipstick just an O ring near the top. Checked it again just now. Full on dipstick. I’ll take a picture some day soon and attach it here

You gotta be careful not to run the wrong oil filter on a Kohler engine. It can ruin the engine and there is an interesting YouTube video on it somewhere.

That youtube video is concerning a specific Kohler engine that has a vertically mounted oil filter with a longer than normal stand pipe easily blocked by too short of a filter, but yes I agree.
