Mower maintenance day. Last oil change I switched to Valvoline RP 5w30. The Ex Mark Lazer Z has 1133.5 on it. I’ve owned this one since 998hrs. Put head gaskets on the 27hp Kohler.

It runs well but has the typical lifter tick. It’s weird, it ticked when cold, then stops, then starts to tick again. Would think it’s the press relief in the oil pump relieving intermittently until warmed up. Using the RP to clean the internals and try to help the tick if it is dirty lifters. Doesn’t use oil, but I do change every 25hrs. I know…….I’m an over-maintainer!

Anyrate…..here’s the filter pics. 25hrs run time
3rd pic shows a weird glue sealing the end plate

Yellow -02S filter is the new installed.

Looks good enough to me. They cross over to Wix 51348 and the like, if you ever want a more cost effective filter.

It seems like most mowers run the same filter size. All my buddies and I tend to just throw together a big order from RockAuto of PG241EX or similar once a year for OPE. Fun fact, the NC Miata runs a 51348 as well.

Thanks for the Kohler 12 050 01 Filter (Black Can Color) C&P

Hoping and politely requesting (please) you also do a C&P on the your new installed Kohler 52 050 02-S Filter (Yellow Can Color) when it reaches the same 25 hour service interval.

We use the (Yellow Can) Kohler 52 050 02-S filter on our 60 inch Exmark Lazer Z with the 38 HP Kohler V-Twin Fuel Injected. Would like to see of any differences from a C&P with the two filters as Kohler suggest the Yellow Can filter can be used with their 10W-50 Labeled oil for 200 hour oil/filter change intervals as opposed to the standard 100 hours. I have seen it stated that the yellow can is an increased debris capacity filter but also wonder if the filtration mesh is finer.

I also change the oil much sooner as 2 quarts of oil are low cost protection. We also do not use Kohler Labeled oil. This mower is a backup mower for us (if needed) that we also use once a week (from May thru October) on a smaller residential yard just to keep it service ready should it be needed. In the almost 4 years we have had it as a backup, we have not needed to use it on the route due to no breakdowns. So currently this engine gets a yearly change at about every 8 hours.

One question. You are using 5W-30 oil and I am wondering why you are not using a thicker oil.
Not aware of your use area and climate extremes. We have a different displacement V-Twin Kohler (999cc) engine but the owner manual seemed to favor the higher viscosity oils for warmer/summer use. We typically use 15W-40 Synthetic CK-4 HDEO (Diesel oil) and do not have to add between changes. If I was using it for extreme early season and late season where morning starts were below 40F I would likely switch to 5W-40 Synthetic CK-4 HDEO.

Thanks for the nice C&P

Best regards

O would have to find the reference, but somewhere Kohler stated to run 5w30 only due to the lifters over pressurizing and bleeding off. This engine, series ch750, has an issue with that.

**Actually they call for 10w30
Darn it……..

Good information on the engine series you are using so good to follow that. From what I have seen, not a significant difference between the 05W and 10W side. You still have the 30 wt side where you are running at operating temperatures covered.

Interesting that the the Kohler Comand Pro Model ECV980 EFI (999cc displacement) we have on our Exmark Lazer Z, Kohler specs out 20W-50 above 32F/0C. They also show 10W-30 acceptable above 0F/-18C. We use 15W-40.

Thanks

*** So I did drain the oil and replaced the 5w30 with VR1 10w30. Just a LOT of lifter chatter with the 5w30. Don’t feel comfortable running that.
