I just changed the break in oil after 5 hours on my Kohler 7000 series engine as recommended by the manufacturer. Out and off is the factory fill, and the Kohler 12 050 01.

It was an ok looking filter. Nitrile ADBV was fine. Metal core and spring. Upon further inspection there seems to be quite a bit of excess glue. I did see a lot of the metal flakes in the oil even as it was draining from the engine, not the filter.

In and on is 2 quarts of Mobil1 10W30, and the CHAMP PH2835XL.

The new filter does not get in the way of the steering (control arms?).

If you ever wanted to try Fram filter the PH8172 crosses over & I've used those myself on an older Command. That Champ looks good though & I'm sure that OEM Kohler caught some of that break in wear. I rebuilt a Kawasaki & I went 10 hours before changing. Needless to say there were plenty of sparkles in the oil similar to what you saw.

I think I will change the oil and filter again at 10 hours just to take a look!

I think you are doing a great job with the break in on this engine. Break in of a filter equipped engine is straight forward. The break in of a motor which does not have an oil filter is more critical and should involve several oil changes.
