How does one know what you are going to need, and what you will not? The last thing I want, is to be in the middle of a job and realize that I need a particular wrench or socket, and not have it. Sure, it is impractical to have every tool that you will ever need. But a good set with both metric and standard, deep well and regular sockets, is handy to have. And for the price, it isn't worth going without. My gas and time is worth more than that.

Have you ever bought individual sockets, ratchets, and combination wrenches? It doesn't take more than a handful of tools, and the price has exceeded how much a good set can be bought for, especially when they are bought on sale. Rarely is a specific tool on sale when you need it.

I've bought many individual sockets, extensions, ratchets, etc. OP stated that he already had a set, but was missing pieces. I was simply trying to inquire about what pieces he might be missing, as sometimes either individual pieces or smaller sets (like a wrench set, single set of sockets, etc.) might be a cheaper way to replace the tools you're missing, without adding a bunch of stuff you'll never use (especially if it's duplicates of sockets that you never use in the first place).

A lot of the guys at work are using Kobalt wrench sets and 1/2" drive socket sets on the machines at work. No one has broken one yet.
I'm using primarily Allen Industrial.

The only times I've broken a socket involved a hammer while breaking loose caliper bolts; that job snapped a ratchet per side of the vehicle, and afterwards I noticed the socket was cracked. Since then I've been of the opinion that cheap sockets, extensions and wrenches are likely "good enough"; ratchets and screwdrivers OTOH need to be of decent quality. I'm not a fan of the multi-bit screwdrivers but so far I have not seen them wear out quick--but the last set of screwdrivers I got from HD were not worth the plastic they were wrapped in.

At one point I went through my toolbox and took an inventory, and wrote down all the sizes I had, and what I wanted to find at garage sales, where I could try to buy 'em for 50c or whatever. I forget now if I did, I think I found I had all I needed, save for deep sockets.

I generally agree with you on multi-bit screwdrivers. But I do have one in my tool box that I really like. Actually, I have three of them. The one in my tool box, and one in each car. It is a Kobalt, and the handle is aluminum, and it ratchets. Great tool. But still, for me at least, multi-bit screwdrivers are not replacements for regular screwdrivers.

Well, I did it. I picked up the Kobalt 217 piece mechanic's tool set on Black Friday, for $99. Actually, it was less than that because I used my Lowe's card, making it less than $94.

I am very happy with what is in the set. It includes close to 110 sockets, a 1/4", a 3/8", and a 1/2" ratchets, all 72 teeth. Very smooth and nicely finished. There are also a metric and standard set of combination wrenches.

About the only items that I would consider as "filler", to bring up the piece count, are the allen wrench sets, and a 3/16" hex driver handle with an assortment of bits.

The sale goes through 12/2. But last year, they went quick and none were available by the end of the sale.

I think you will like them, Kobalt seem to be one of the better hand tool brands right now. Post a review and some pics after you use them for a while!
