Pick up some horse wormer. I posted this on a dog forum ''The Ivermectin that is the active ingredient in many heartworm remedies is actually rather cheap. In fact it has saved the sight of millions of people in Africa where it only costs pennies a day to prevent river blindness.''

You can get a big bottle at the farm type stores and maybe Pan Cur too.

Horse wormer? I'd be surprised if that didn't cost more than the people version!

We de-worm our dogs (and goats) ivermectin for sheep. $80 bottle will do many dogs for life, we just have to calculate the dosage correctly.

Horse wormer isn't that high. Just make sure you get the dosage by weight correct when you take it. When I worked at a pet shop I knew a guy that was worried he might have some parasites. He calculated the correct dose and took it without issue. Apparently it worked well. We used it on all kinds of animals, not just mammals.

I'd have to look up correct dosages but our 100lb dog takes far far less(1/10th?) than a 100lb goat, so you can't just go by weight. Maybe its ruminants vs. single stomachs? Some carefully worded questions to a pharmacist would help you figure out how much the people dose is of the active ingredient.

Yeah, it depends on the kind of animal. The maximum human dose of Ivermectin is 200 micrograms/kg. So calculate based on 100mcg/kg to be safe. This dosage might be too much or too little for other animals.

Don't blame me if you kill yourself, but I'd do it.

I've a cousin who was a drug pusher for a pharma company, and her ex BIL was a pusher for the same company, but for the veterinary versions.

She drove a work supplied BMW, provided antipasto plates for overworked GPs, and eye charts/desk examples with product names in them while he drove a Ford Falcon station wagon.

The veterinary supplies (of exactly the same drugs) were significantly cheaper for some reason.

i guess dogs can't sue!

Farmers can 'though.

And the person would have to prove that the drug caused greater than 15% total and permanent disability to even get to the post.

Drugs are sold with incredibly high mark ups. Don't know about the rest of the stuff, but as I pointed out, the heartworm rememdy does. As mentioned, the $80 bottle from the farm store would last a dog a life time. I don't think you can buy a years supply of Heartgard+ for that.

By the way, the drug companies will give away or reduce rates for the more expensive drugs to the working poor, those with a family income less than $70,000. I paid $178 for my first month's Plavix. Now I am signed up for a free years supply. Go to their website, down load a form and turn it in to the doctor along with proof of income.

I grow 275 heads of garlic (2,000 cloves) each year. No parasites or vampires here. Come to think of it, even the mailman walks more quickly past here!

The farm animal versions have to be cheap per animal(a few dollars) otherwise the farmer will find other alternatives more economical. So I think the farm versions must retail much closer to production cost as that's what the market will bear.

We grow our own garlic too, some heirloom variety with purple skins. Every time I think I'm getting a cold I'll down a couple cloves raw... I don't feel too good for 10 or 20 minutes but I haven't gotten a cold since I've started doing this.

Can you just swallow them whole?

I don't think you'd get the benefit that way. Just remove the outer peel, hit them a couple times with a tenderizer and wash them down with a gulp of water. Do them all right in a row, like BAM BAM BAM BAM BAM so you don't have time to think about how nasty they taste before you finish.

My brother has been a vegetarian for 35 yrs. He got into garlic big time for a bit. After a while you could smell him 10' away. It was coming out of his pores. I like it in a good meat sauce, salads or bread or anything. Onions too. The active ingredient in hot peppers, Capsium (sic), is a natural repellent for most life forms. It has been used as a natural anti- fouling paint.

Correct - there are some rapid reactions that take place when the cell walls are broken.

I use most of my garlic in cooking and canning, but I do eat some raw. I prefer small bites of garlic with larger bites of a smoked sausage such as kielbasa - great combination and much less mouth burn.

I am growing six different gourmet varieties, and they should start emerging soon, if it ever stops snowing.
