Anyone here use or have used Klotz Estorlin (any grade) in their automobile? Its pretty pricey but everything is going up Dino and Synthetic wise too. $120 for 2.5 gallons/10 Quarts.

I'm trying to find out more about this oil for use in automobiles as it does say on the PDF tech sheet (KE-930) that it is used in stock automobiles.

Much help is appreciated!

Thanks,

Scott

SKTO, welcome to BITOG!

I have used Klotz racing 2-stroke oil many years ago but have never tried their 4-stroke oil.

I would hazard a guess that no one has tried Klotz Estorlin hear.
Since it's targeted as a race oil you cold try that forum.

What I can offer is that the oil is likely partly ester based; hence the name and it does come in a lot of grades starting with 0W-20. Unfortunately Klotz provides virtually no product data spec's (PDS) on the oil so I would be reluctant to try it for that reason alone.
It's about the same price in Canada as Red Line Oil and they provide a wealth of info on their products. That's one of the reasons why RL is highly regarded on this website; we like a lot of published specifications.

Thanks Caterham!

I got some info on the 10w30 "Racing" oil.

Pour Point: 30F
Viscosity in cST @ 100F/40C: 10.20 Average: 9.30Min - 12.50Max
Flash Point: 480 F
Film Strength: 8/10 (higher is better)
Certification: API SJ-SH/CD
Colour: Red
Maximum RPM: 10 000

I've heard of people mixing it with their transmission fluid or doing a direct replacement with it hence why the colour is red.

I contacted a Klotz rep. They said that they use it in their 4 stroke motors including a new Ford F-150 (V8) and Ford Escape (V6). He said it'll quiet and engine down a bit and provides smooth starts in colder weather.

I asked for a better tech sheet and they couldn't provide me with one, just told me to go to the site. I went to the Klotz Warehouse site instead and saw what was there (above). It is in a PDF format and most of the info off of it is above.

Thanks,

SKTO/Scott

The red colour is simply die and is of no consiquence.

The viscosity of 10.2cSt is the KV100 spec' not the KV40 spec'.
And the range is simply the SAE kinematic range for a 30 wt oil.

If you were thinking of this oil in a 30wt I'd go with their 5W-30 or 0W-30. The 10W-30 grade is largely obsolete with synthetic oils.

Ya sorry the KV40 spec is 71 cST. And the 100 F should be 100 C.

Why is the 10W-30 obsolete with synthetic oils?

If those kinematic viscosities are correct the resulting viscosity index is terrible at 129. I don't know of any modern 5W-30 or 10W-30 oil with a VI that low....not impressed.

The reason the 10W-30 grade is obsolete with most brands of the better synthetic oils is because you get a higher VI with a 5W-30 with virtually no increase in shear stability.

Low VI, old API cert of SJ, 10w-30 weight, and no real HTHS #. I'd stay away. May be a good racing oil, maybe, but probably a bad DD oil.
