My youngest daughter decided 2 years ago to ditch all other instruments and learn electric bass guitar. Reason? Because she wanted to be "better than dad" so I've been told by others.....she learns at school and takes private lessons.

So now in 7th grade she easily won the spot as the bass player in the school jazz band, beating out 8th grade boys. You want to probably think I'm bragging on her....well I've only seen her play in concert three times.....so not much of a sample, and she randomly practices every day. Pop, rock, jazz, mostly stuff she makes up....but I "hear" her.

She sounds like this: search You Tube for Joyce Cooling,"Third Wish" "Cool of the Night" and "Say you will" and listen to the bass lines. She can learn these songs in a day or so.

Oh yeah, I still fix and mod her basses and she uses my big $100 eBay Fender amp and my built black bass from time to time....but I hardly (can) play now. You dads know what I'm saying.

Kinda know what you're saying. My soon to be 13 year old son who has Asperger's Disorder plays clarinet in the jr. high band and is dang good at it.

I couldn't get him to try out for percussion and play snare drum. Nope..he wanted to play the clarinet! I'm surprised they even taught him how to blow the thing! But he's really good!

Be proud of your daughter, especially now that she has taken up your instrument! Just wish my son had followed in my footsteps, so to speak, so that he could have taught me to sight read!

My 23 year old Daughter also has Asperger's and is doing better over the past several years, after about 15 years of age... She's a Pharmacy Tech, studying to be a Pharmacist and aces everything.

My 19 year old stepson Matthew decided about a year ago that he wanted to upgrade from his smaller keyboard to a bigger one with the full 88 keys on it and in a short period of time he has really come a long way! He's completely self taught, he has some program which helps to teach him new songs, but other than that he has had no formal training. Here is a YouTube video of him playing Moonlight Sonata:

He played that in front of his entire high school last year before he graduated and did not make a single mistake. I got tears in my eyes listening to him play that night!

My own son Alex is also very good at music, Matthew gave him his old keyboard, and even at only age 9 he has been able to teach himself a few songs too! I also gave him my old guitar (a Fender Squire strat) and he's gotten pretty good at that too! Him and I always find the time to jam when he comes to stay with me on the weekends. He loves to play the intro to Rock you like a Hurricane, and Iron Man.

I personally think it's great when kids learn how to play a musical instrument, it gives them confidence and it's definitely better than just sitting in their rooms playing video games!

Hello again gentlemen and women. I also still play my trombone that I bought for $75 back when I was bout 12 yrs old. Played that and percusssion, and I do enjoy just playing on some bad days/evenings with a friend that plays guitar.

Funny what drives children.

Our 8yo daughter has been pretty much self taught on the keyboard and recorder (simple stuff, playing by ear, don't think she's accomplished yet, but she's got a good ear). We muck around together with "see if you can play that".

She decided this year to learn the flute...and was asking me for help.

As soon as she realised I couldn't read music, nor finger a flute (it's nuts), and could scarcely blow a note on it, she absolutely took off on her mission to read music, and master the flute...and tries to teach me bits of it.

A big part of growing up is discovering that you can actually "do" the things that adults do - that you can apply yourself and have tangible results. It is a wonderful thing, both being the one to do the discovering, and to see it happen.

Amazing how timeless music is. I played guitar as a teen and these were two of the first songs I learned (Iron Man was the first). That was over twenty years ago. Pretty cool to see they are alive and well with the youth of today too.

My 7 year old started playing Rock Band drums when he was 4.

I didn't think it would help become a musician of any sort. like those silly multi-colored button plastic guitars don't really teach you anything. But the first day he got a real set of drums he was pounding out the rhythm to Jimi Hendrix's Fire within a few minutes.

He's starting to get a little style now too. He plays the end of the verses on Metallica's Wherever I May Roam with one hand in the air bringing it down on the crash at the right time into the chorus.

Going to have to get him a double kick pedal if he sticks to the Metallica theme.
