Kia Oil Filters

Probably some of the top-tier filters. There's nothing magical about the Hyundai/Kia filters. They appear to be well made filters with a silicone anti-drainback valve, but I don't know the filter's specs.

I use the OEM filters most of the time on my Sonata. I had a really bad knock with an aftermarket filter. There's a TSB warning about that issue.

Use the oem if it is available as the korean parts are excellent vs aftermarket. Dont risk 17K$ investment on a 2 dollar savings 3 times a year.

The bulletin regarding KIA/Hyundai filters was in regard to spin on filters. Cartridge filters are a different animal.

OEM is never a mistake, but I just bought a Napa Gold (Wix) for the new Sedona, not only does it appear very well made, it actually says "Made in South Korea" on it. Another member here has been using them with great success (I think it was sayjac) so I went ahead and bought one.

I plan to post pics if I get time just for info for any who may be interested. I would not be surprised if the Napa Gold filter came from the exact same plant as the OEM ones do.

Been using Purolator gold filters in my wife's Kia for years. Had to take off the valve cover at 90k miles last year, and it looked like new in there. So I believe the oil and filter are doing a good job. Cheap enough and easy to get.,,

Pennzoil Conventional 5w20 and a PureONE filter.

It's the misses' daily driver, but I haven't heard any noise issues regarding the filter.

appreciate the feedback. I've been running Mobil Super 5000 and it is great oil. I will stick with PureONE...

I have a Honda CRV and am considering running the Kia/Hyundai oil filter. The oil filters interchange and I hear many good things about the Kia/Hyundai oil filters. The Honda filters seem to be hit and miss with Honeywell etc. Like many of you, I use Pure 1 oil filters but Kia/Hyundai oil filters seem to be of excellent quality with an excellent price.

The Hyundai/Kia oil filters are made by Mobis, an affiliate company under the giant Hyundai company umbrella. As a DIY Veloster owner, I was immensely impressed by an inspection of the filter, starting with the paint quality, weight, cleanliness (absence of assembly debris), and the shrink-wrap cover over the thread end. Pics of cut open Hyundai filters confirmed (IMO) a continuation of quality construction, e.g. pleat number & uniformity, etc. The price is right for me $6.12.

Agreed, they are great filter and come with crush washer.

If your spin on oil filter has M20 X 1.5 threads and you have the room Baldwin makes several filters that will work on your Kia. Some are oversize filters so you would have to have the room for these to fit.

Granted the Hyundai/Kia canister/spin-on filters appear well made, but has anyone seen a published efficiency spec? I haven't, making them similar to other oems in that efficiency is unknown.

If the price is right they are likely fine. That's not to say many aftermarket filters using a silicone adbv like the H/K uses aren't as good or better including efficiency. And that includes knowledge of the old tsb. If the aftermarket filter, either Purolator or Wix or something else with known efficiency isn't giving a start up rattle, then I'd see no problem using one of them.

As for the Hyundia cartridge, I've been very satisfied with the Napa Gold/Wix cartridge which is every bit as good imo as the oem C250 and cost half as much. And my local Napa dealer is close making them easily obtained.

My filter knock was caused by a Champ-Labs made STP branded filter. I don't know if it was an E-Core or not. I don't even know if they make E-Cores in that size. I have another one of them in my stash and it is not an E-Core

It wasn't a rattle on start up, it was a loud knock while the engine was running. It was so loud I was sure it couldn't be caused by only the filter. But, an OEM filter fixed it and it never returned. Strangely, the knock didn't start right when I put on the STP filter, it started after several hundred miles.

When I bought the car it had a Fram filter on it and there wasn't any knock with that filter. I don't know what about the Champ Labs filter made it knock.

Here's the Hyundai version of the TSB, for anyone who's interested:

Like I said, it's an old tsb dating to 05. You'll also note the tsb doesn't say an aftermarket filter can't be used, because if they did Hyundai would have to pay for the filter. Also the STP oil filter is Champ's bottom of the line filter with a nitrile adbv not silicone. And some use a clicker type bypass which is considered suspect in some circles.

To each there own, I wouldn't be afraid to try a quality aftermaket filter using a 'silicone' adbv like the oem, which you failed to quote from my post.
