I thought I'd start a new post on this.

What is the European crowds thoughts on Kendal GT1 5w40.

Apparently it meets MB 229.5. Its also $2 a liter less than GC and Mobil 1 0w40.

We'll be changing it again in one year and roughly 5K miles, so it shouldnt be an issue. I'd like to know more about this stuff. Ive used the Syn-blend in a honda with good results.

It'd probably do as well as any other 5w-40 oil out there. I don't think it's on the official MB approval list, but since you're out of warranty, it doesn't really matter. If you can get it for a good price, go for it.

Out here, both GC and Mobil 1 0w-40 go on sale rather often and then I can get them for $5/qt, so I don't bother trying anything else, but maybe in Canada the situation is different.

EDIT: Actually, I take it back. It is on the official MB list.

It looks to be a good oil. It has a HT/HS of 3.7 and a TBN of 9.2. It's also on the Porsche approval list.

Thanks guys,

yeah I noticed it on the list with some pretty big players.

Maybe that will be her fill.

It helps that its regular price is always less than either GC or M1 and the shop that sells it is a small independant, and the owner is a really great guy.

This is what I found on the Conocophilips website which owns 76 and Kendall.

GT-1 Full Synthetic Motor Oil, SAE 5W-40, is fully approved for service fill under the following OEM specifications:

* BMW Longlife-01 Oil
* Mercedes-Benz Sheet 229.5
* Porsche A40 (excludes Cayenne V6 for extended drain & Cayenne diesel)
* VW 505.00, 502.00

Features & Benefits

* Outstanding resistance to viscosity and thermal breakdown at high temperatures
* Protects against sludge and varnish formation
* Excellent wear protection
* Protects against rust and bearing corrosion
* Low volatility for reduced oil consumption
* Excellent low-temperature pumpability for protection during cold starts
* Good foam resistance

Yeah, its sounds good on paper.

I picked up some at the local shop for $8 a liter. Which is $3 less than 0w40. It'll be interesting to see how it compares.

With A40 and 229.5 approvals you can be sure it performs well. If Peterborough experiences freezing temps I'd give a nod to the other two for cold weather starting performance.

To my surprise I can get this oil for a good price locally.

On paper it looks good and has all the right certs - BMW, MB, Porche, VW

Any reason not to use this oil?
Any real world experience for BITOG'ers or UOA out there?

The Kendall 5W-40 is equal or better then most Euro made 5W-40's. On most Euro car forums. You will always have the Euro oil snobs. They think because their car was made in Europe, that only Euro oil should only be used.

The Kendall and Chevron 5W-40's meet the latest Euro specs, such as MB 229.5 and BMW LL-01. A good portion of the Euro made 5W-40's only meet older specs such as MB 229.3 and BMW LL-98.

You should stock up on the Kendall!

I also agree. The VW and Audi forums are full of people obsessed with Lubro-Moly/Liqui-Moly Synthoil Premium 5w40 that's like $9/qt at NAPA. It's a group III with mediocre VI, mediocre TBN, and no real redeeming qualities.

Give one of these Kendall distributors in Illinois a call.

Kendall

$5.94 a quart shipped to Chicago from here.

Kendall 5W-40 shipped

For $5.94, I think I am going to stock up on a couple of cases. Quality CP product and cheaper than M1, and close to M1 price when on sale. Good deal.

Interesting. I wonder if this is a Gr2 with a new add pack? I only say this because of the price. Of course it could be Gr3 and economies of scale allow for the low price.
