Nothing better to do today, pulled the valve cover off our push mower. I've never played around with small engines in the past, so it was neat to see such a tiny little engine.

It's had a steady diet of M1 5w30 since new. It's going into its 20th year of service soon, purchased it May 1993.

I have found M1 5 or 10-30 oils are excellant for small engines.

I have a 15 year old Snapper mower with that engine. I've bent the crankshaft twice, ugh. Straightened it out with a 5lb sledge and a dial indicator.

Anyway, mine's used M1 from the beginning and is still quite healthy. But it is not tolerant of ethanol in fuel (won't idle no matter what) .

That is one great engine.

I had to replace the carburetor on this engine this past spring. Ethanol had finally done it in, although I'm not sure why. It's the first carb I've actually had to replace due to ethanol.
