I can confirm the MC cartridge filter for the 2.3 since the added center tube support exhibits almost no twist/crush after a 5k run. I had a PureONE that did distort, but even that one held up acceptably. The Motorcraft is by far the best value and I highly recommend it. Remember: the filter cap already has a center support tube, making it impossible for a filter to collapse.
I've used Mazda OEM from the dealer, PureONE, Wix, and Motorcraft.
I was actually very disappointed in the Wix with a rubber gasket on the end instead of the OE felt style.
Fram is actually closest to the Mazda OE construction, but I will not pay the asking price.
Purolator is identical to Motorcraft, but costs 2x, with the PureONE costing a couple $ more.
