lets not talk about how k & n in some peoples opinion isnt the best at filtering.

what if i got a k & n cone filter plus a outerwears pre filter over it? will it filter better?

i been trying alot to find a AFE filter but may just use a k & n filter with that pre filter. im just courious.

No let's talk about it.

I have a drop-in panel, and I was cleaning my MAF the other day due to the oiled K&N screwing up the hot wires that GM and Ford use on the MAF.

Anyways, I had opportunity to examine my panel filter.

It was MUDDY and DAMP in a circular area underneath the air pipe. The rest of the filter was clean.

I rotated the filter to the other side until such a time as I can buy a paper filter.

I am not kidding, it was actual grimey mud buildup.

If you have a MAF sensor, don't use a K&N. Period.

I don't want to get into the whole K&N debate, but basically your saying that the filter was dirtier in front of the intake hose? Isn't that expected, especially with a higher flowing filter?

On a second note, K&Ns are very popular on many MAF sensor cars. I'm a member of a Pontiac GTP message board, and I'd say at least 75-80% of them use K&Ns, and I haven't really heard of any MAF failures.

I have a K&N on two of my cars with MAFs, haven't had any problems with either. One has been on for about 80,000 miles, and only cleaned twice.

My guess is that most problems occur from over-oiling.

I Have allways used K&N filters on my vehicles and have never had any problems. I have a FIPK on my truck, and it has been there for almost 60k, and no problems whatsoever.........my silicon levels in UOA are pretty normal as well. I also have an aftermarket MAF sensor on the truck, that is supposedly more sensitive and accurate......and once again.....no problems.

lol i thought them prefilters would help. maybe a foam prefilter one instead of a standard screen filter huh?

yeah the ultimate debate about k & n.

Mass Air Flow

It sits between the air filter and the throttle body...

The MAF is the mass air flow. it is a highly sensitive sensor that measures the mass of air entering the engine. It is usually in the intake manifold just after the throttle body. Oil for an oiled air filter can contaminate it and mess up its reading.

It's USUALLY between the air filter and throttle body. Some are in the air filter and some are in the throttle body. I haven't seen one in the intake, that seems UNusual to me.

Unless your refering to the MAP sensor which is different.(measures manifold pressure/vacuum)
