I can't seem to find the answer if there is a difference between the K&N KN 204 and KN 204-1 oil filter? I did read back around 2016 K&N had a recall on the KN 204 filters due to leakage where the 17mm nut is tact welded on. That's it. A few posts I've read in my research is the KN 204-1 is the same filter but an improved version?

Strange since I see a lot of motorcycle stores still sell the KN 204 as motorcycle specific i.e. Triumph Scrambler 1200. But no mention of the KN 204-1. Am I over thinking this since I want to use the correct K&N oil filter on my Triumph Scrambler 1200. Thanks!

My 'net search basically says the 204-1 is the updated version of the 204. Many hits on that found.

I did email K&N Technical Dept. for clarification. Awaiting response. But I think this is the difference I believe, nothing. The K&N KN 204 oil filter comes in two configurations: 204-1 (Black) and 204-C (Chrome). If this is true, the K&N Tech is probably shaking his head saying not this question again......

Today K&N Customer Service replied back to my inquiry of the KN-204 oil filter:

The kn-204 was discontinued and replaced with the kn-204-1

Thank you,

K&N Customer Service

Majority here I assume knew this. So I'm using the correct oil filter which is good to know!

I have both. I put them next to each other and the 204-1 is slightly taller. Same O ring attachment to engine side. The 204-1 actual interior filter looking thru the holes on the engine side appears black, and the 204 red.
It appears they just slightly increased the size of the actual interior filter.
