K&N-Good or Bad

Throw it out. The oem Honda filters are the best made filters I've seen for my Honda. I prefer oem.

K&N filters increase air flow by NOT FILTERING THE AIR. Here's a simple test. Take a panel type K&N filter and hold it up to some light. You'll be able to see HOLES in the media. The cotton gauze element has voids in it. Many appear large enough for a grain of sand to pass right through.

K&Ns are good for racing or limited duty use where max performance is needed. They aren't that great for everyday daily driver use because they let more junk through than a paper filter does. I'd rather give up a few horsepower to keep the engine in my daily driver alive longer. Just my opinion.

so dont run them in the desert or on your lawnmower?

If you are like some mindless robots on here soon you will think K&N is bad. It is amazing how many people on here do not think for themselves but that is the way of the world these days.

How much smaller is light than dirt? I can see light with a paper filter also, I know you can't see that though with where your head is.

He didn't say you can see light through a K&N filter. He said you can see HOLES in it. We all know you can see "light" through most any filtering media. But if you hold a K&N filter up to your eyes, you can look right through it.

This is nothing new. This is how oiled cotton gauze filters work. They require a film of oil to filter properly, because the cotton gauze is not nearly fine enough to filter on its own.

I put a drop-in K&N in my 92 VX and I don't worry about dirt getting in. I clean it every 15k to be safe.

IMO, with the way the intake turns and twists, it will take some miracle for any measurable particles of sand/dirt to even get to the filter...but I don't know for sure without a UOA. I'm sure some amount of dust is getting by compared to a traditional air filter, though. Dangerous amounts, though?

From what I've read on here, it's only in places like Soviet Russia or off-roading do you need to concern yourself with the extra 10ppm dust intruding into your engine.

I wouldn't worry about it in Atlanta.

haha, good point. That was kinda my thinking as well.

I still have the one that came in the G5 in the basement and have been thinking about giving it a shot. If cleaning my MAF helps and makes some improvement in mileage, it may be a good thing to do with the filter service anyway, or shortly after to mitigate any oil concerns.

I see on their site they have a grease to seal the filter to the air box, anyone using that?

a lot of different greases are available to do that. Many people mess up when they install the air filter regardless of brand.

MAF cleaning is a necessary maintenance practice for us and none of our many vehicles have a K&N.

How often are you cleaning your MAF? I've never cleaned one and my truck is over 50k miles with a K&N intake/filter installed since almost new. I haven't experienced any noticeable drop in MPG.

It's nothing you need to do often. Typically it would occur close to 75 or 100k miles.

I have had some dramatic improvements in the voltage signal leading to greatly increased driveability. Just be cautious!
