hi everyone, got a 2002 tacoma 2.4l 4 banger with 285,000 miles. its finally starting to consume some oil, not visually. been running Mobil 1 5w30 high mileage. should i go to a 10w40 or add a oil supplement? if so whats better hyperlube or lucas? thank ahead for all who reply.

Check pcv valve, check for oil leaks.

If it was me I wouldn't do anything different until it drank a quart between oil changes. At that point I would just add more oil.

When it hits a quart per gas fillup, then I'd change to a thicker oil.

Not Lucas.
How did you confirm consumption if it is not visible?
Start to top off with 10w40 and see if consumption decreases.

I would keep using the Mobil 1 High Mileage...good oil. I haven't switched over to HM yet on my truck, but it only has 250,000 miles on it...I've been running Quaker State 10w40 lately, but it gets whatever is on sale.

And that's what I would recommend for you: whatever you can get on sale....it's going to use some anyway, might as well be inexpensive...

thanks for the reply, but wouldn't a 0w40 weight offer better cold starting performance regardless of where you live?

Perhaps a non synthetic high mileage. I'd try an oil like conventional Mobil High Mileage or Pennzoil High Mileage 5w30. I would go 40 weight only if it really starts gulping oil. How much is it using in how many miles? No lucas stabilizer, it has not additives and dilutes your oils add pack.

It doesn't hurt to try other well known high mileage oils like Quaker State Defy, Castrol High Mileage or Valvoline Maxlife. What part of California are you in? Give a 10w30 or your 10w40 a run.

So it remains all the way full or remains within the "safe" level? Either way I wouldn't change a thing and keep doing what you're doing.

im in so cal, summers here already. is 10w40 a better option just for summer? im still confused. I used 5w30 religiously, but now? I will stay away from lucas oil additive.

How did you confirm consumption?

i did my own oil change, checked level when cold and after roughly 1000 miles checked again in morning and a little less than 1/3 liter short.

yes. i guess i see what the actual oil consumption is at 6000 oci and go from there. stay away oil additives (thickeners)?

Dont change a thing ,find the offender.(i bet it is probably ethanol in the gas .easy to confirm at next oil change use 0% ethanol gas .check for leak .unless you forgot to change the timing chain (yes again)lol
