Just picked up a 97 Mitsu Montero

Just picked up a 97 Montero with 57k on the ticker. Looked at the 3 used oil analysis on the board but I am not farmiliar with the 3.5 V6 in the Montero's.
The manual calls for 5w30 and the sump holds 4.5 Quarts. The oil filter is tiny (AC Delco PF1127) Anyone know of a oversized filter for this engine as well as any oil weight reccomendations?
I am going to run a treatment of Auto Rx in the engine and trans and then I was thinking 6 month OCI's with Mobil 1 Extended Performance 5w30 or maybe a more robust 5W40? The smaller sump makes me think anything longer than 6 months or 7500 miles is pushing it.

Purolator 24458 (discontinued, but can still be found if you look around), Purolator 20073, Wix 51347 (Napa 1347)

5w30 Mobil 1 will be just fine in this engine.

Mobil 1 Extended Performance 5w30 is very thin; 5-30 M1 is a better choice in that grade or you'll be back at BITOG complaining about noise and consumption with that EP.

Anyone have any expirence with this engine? I am currently running Mobil 1 5w40 in my 2.5L Jeep engine and would love to run it in this 3.5 Mitsu V6. Would that be a decent choice for this engine?

I have a '95 and an '03 Montero. I have never run a 4W40 oil in them. Always 5W30 or 10W30. They both run quiet. OTOH, I am sure a 5W40 would be fine.

'97 is a good year for Montero's. Not a very popular car, but people who own them, like them. I like them. They have been extremely reliable. They come with an oil cooler so that helps with engine longevity. Transmission is also very robust. It has a drain plug so it is easy to do partial transmission fluid changes.

However, the crankshaft pully has been know to fall off!! Since your truck is 8-9 years old I would consider changing the timing belt, etc. It is a pretty big job with those trucks.(radiator needs to come out etc). Good luck!

I have a 96 with the 3-liter engine and manual transmission. These SUVs are somewhat crude but bulletproof. I changed the timing belt at 60K miles as called for in the OM. It was perfect. My mechanic advised going to 90K before changing it again. And it IS a major evolution, as Winston says, involving taking off the radiator. And in my case, the bull bar and foglights.

I now have Mobil 1 5w30/SL in the truck, and added one quart of Mobil 1 0W-40/SL (as that's what was on hand) when at about 5000 miles. I will change oil in about 1000 miles at the 7500 mark (now have 74K on the truck) to Mobil 1 5w30/SM.

Typical mpg is 20, although you will probably get a little less with the 3.5 and automatic transmission.

I think this is what the rest of the world knows as the Pajero? Is it SOHC or DOHC? I have a Pajero with the 4D56 intercooler turbo,also a Diamante with the DOHC 3 litre motor,same block.

They'll run on any oil - I use a Fuchs 10/30 synthetic in mine.Most important is that you do the water pump and all tensioners and idlers when the cambelt is changed - if the waterpump fails,so does the rest of the motor.That's why I picked up the Diamante cheap...failed water pump and it destroyed both cyl heads.

Consumer Reports in US rated Mitsubishi Monteros as "unacceptable" in terms of stability (roll-over risk in avoidance test) so just be careful with it. I am sure it is a great SUV just not too stable it seems.

That was for the '01 model. They changed the suspension and added electronic stability control in '03.

The '93 through '00 models are a completely different animal than the '01. OTOH the '93 to '00 are tall and would probably tip over pretty easily. There is a roll-over risk with every SUV, they are not a car.
