Just got off the phone with O'Reilly's...

So I saw that O'Reilly's has that 5 quarts of their house synthetic brand with an Mobil 1 filter for 19.99. Sounded like a pretty good deal, and since O'Reilly is soon to have their house brand synthetic (O'Reilly's) in a 0w-20 weight, I thought maybe I'd call around and see if any of the stores had it yet. One of the employees told me that it's still special order as of now, but STRONGLY recommended not to run it more than 5,000 miles. He said that Shell makes and packages O'Reilly oil, and that it isn't the same as the Rotella T6 stuff. So...

1) I thought Omni packaged O'Reilly synthetic, and that
2) O'Reilly base oils came from whomever is cheapest at the time, and
3) In the U.S., what other synthetics does Shell make readily available other than Rotella? We don't get Helix here...

I live in SE Michigan, if that makes any difference as to who makes/packages the oil, as it does with SuperTech oil. Any thoughts?

Does the employee have used oil analysis' from many vehicles to backup his claim?

If not, discard his advice. Nearly all, if not all, guys behind the counter don't understand oil.

its true even most mechanics are a little lacking on oil info.
i would pass on the orielly oil and get a case of PP for 24 bucks. hard to beat that

Shell owns Quaker State and Pennzoil. I doubt the O'Reilly's oil is Pennzoil Platinum or Pennzoil Ultra, but it could be Quaker State Ultimate Durability.

Seriously this is the only way to tell if an oil is good. Asking a 7 dollar per hour counter jockey what he thinks shouldn't hold water.

Highly doubtful. I honestly don't believe that ANY major player in the oil world is going to sell proprietary add packs and specially blended base oils to to an auto parts store, so they can turn around sell it (read undercut)the major manufacturer.

While in many cases you're definitely right, I know there's a few past and present parts store employees on BITOG.



My personal experience with store branded oil...

I ran predominately store brand oil in the recommended grade in our cars for several years and approximately 270,000 miles between two cars. I (we) still own both cars. The car I will use for this discussion has a GM 3.1 (healthy). I refer to it because I can see inside the engine. From 90k to 238k it's been on religious 3k changes with an Ashland supplied parts store oil, Wix filters and good maintenance. There is a sheen of crud over the valve springs, rockers, bolt heads and the head casting itself.... With that kind of regimen, it should be spotless, but it's not. This leads me to believe that while the oil is doing it's job from a lubricant standpoint (obviously, or it wouldn't have 247k on the odo), it may be slacking off a bit on keeping the engine clean and free of deposits.

FYI, from 238k to 247k, I've ran Pennzoil conventional (cheap, major company) and have noticed an (slight) improvement in the area viewable from the fill cap and darker than normal drains.

So I guess, it may be a good idea to investigate before plunging into extended drains on store brand 0w-20.

I would buy it for others, just not for mine....
