I would get separate Docsis 3+ modem and then a WIFI router. Look on the web for router cmparisons/reviews. The Asus i got then was at the top of the list and continues to work very well.

Good router now have extra features like USB printer and external drive/NAS support and even some cloud server functions. Example my ASUS can download bit Torrents all by itself no PC needed.

You can go either way, with separate or combined. Combined saves space, but if one part of the device goes then the whole thing needs to be replaced. Cost is comparable.

Wireless router is all he needs. I have been using Charter like forever, and I was glad they did away with the modem lease fee.

Sounds like a good idea. There's already like 20 wifi's that my antenna picks up at my house. I'll probably go with this idea. The coverage that i need is mainly in the living room. Kids are 7 and 10, so they don't have comps or laptops yet,plus less radiation or whatever it puts out would be better.Too mch already with the neighbors.

TWC charges about $9/month for their modem. We bought a cheap one for $20 a year ago. It's paid for itself many times over by now. No plans to upgrade service in the near future, so a DOCSIS 2 modem is just fine.

Oh come on now, don't buy into that [censored]. "radiation" my [censored]. It's non-ionizing radiation, and you should really worry more about the huge radio and TV antennas all around us. These routers put out a very small amount of "radiation" and again, the difference between ionizing and non-ionizing radiation should be clear to anyone who took science class.

Either way, a SB6141 or SB6183 will serve you well, the 6183 will give you more future-proofing for higher speeds in the future. For wifi, I personally recommend the TP-Link Archer C5 (Around $75 or so), it's performance and stability is great for the price. I'm currently rocking a TP-Link Archer C8, which is also excellent, but a bit more expensive ~$120 but allows higher throughput on the AC band if you have clients which can take advantage of it.
