I just got cable internet and they want me to use one of their modems,which is a dpc3010. It's not a wireless one. Do I need a modem and a router now, if I want to have wifi and hardwire a couple of things to use? the service is rated at 60mbs. thanks.

You don't have to use their modem if you don't want to pay the monthly equipment rental fee. You can buy your own.
And yes, in addition to a modem, you will need a router. There are combo boxes that can serve both functions, but in my experience it is better to have the two functions performed by separate boxes.

Don't get an all in one unit: Cable modem and wireless router. You need a wireless modem. Make sure the rear LAN ports are Gigabit Ethernet ports. DO NOT get a cheap Wi-Fi router. Get something rated as having a more powerful signal.
If you use their modem, they'll most likely charge you a rental fee of $10 per month or so. It's MUCH cheaper to buy your own.

And not all providers let you use your own modem. If I want to change anything on my current cable setup, I will end up with a cable company owned modem, and the cost of it is built into the cost of the service (no lease fee). I'm grandfathered in under an older plan, but I get zero support if I have issues...

If you use their hardware then when you dont have service they can troubleshoot for you what is wrong.. if you have your own hardware they will blame whatever problem you have on your equipment and basically you are on your own to figure it out.
I dont know how big your house is etc..but I have a wireless router and bought a wifi booster to sling the signal through the house.
Also dont forget if you live close to other homes to protect your wifi or the leechers will steal your bandwidth.

Do not rent their modem. Ask for their Qualified Hardware list, for example, here it is for Comcast:

I prefer to use a cable modem (mine) and a separate WiFi Router (mine). The SurfBoard is a good modem.

I have had good luck with the Archer C7. Good range, stable, fast, not expensive. Hits all the marks for me.

Here are more specifics. Charter, 1 story, 1220 sq. ft wooden construction. I don't need a super strong one.Any basic decent combo. They will charge me to rent modem.Anyone selling any?
My isp provides a very nice Motorola wireless modem/router combo. I was going to buy my own but this one's working good
Most modem/router gateways are expensive and not that reliable. You're better off getting each separately. TP-Link & Tenda make decent routers for a good price. Ask Charter if they even let customers provide their own modems. If so, find out what models are approved to work on their network; not all are. At 60 MBPS, probably going to need a DOCSIS 3.0 modem.
I have an Arris/Motorola SB6141 model with a Netgear R8000 router. No issues with my ISP, Cox Communications.
Check again if Charter charges for renting a modem. They did away with that several years ago in our market (as well as most of the country as far as I'm aware of) - and it is included in the charge for internet service. (For background, they were sued many years ago for continuing to charge modem lease fees for folks who had their own. Turns out they had no idea who had what).
Now if this is for the wireless router, then yes - they would charge for that.

I have the "all-in-one" which includes phone and internet. Its pretty advanced . It searches for the best wavelength. Never had a problem with it. If you use your own, be prepared to pay when there is a problem. Its not that much and great peace of mind. My service is great. Only way to go.
$140/ month includes all the taxes, phone, internet, and TV.
30 mbs down 6 mbs up. Never any slower. Can't beat it.
