I was on my way to walmart and this cop pulls me over and says iam 59 in a 35 i [censored] because i didnt think i was going that fast. What should i do???????

You should have tased the useless [censored].

Sorry for that outbreak.

Go to court with your video camera and scream brutality.

Pay it.
Go to court and haggle. (my usual - sometimes you get lucky....er...justice)

That's a classic, they say you were going 59 in a 35 to get you to admit to driving 45, write you the ticket, and you can't contest it.

Play dumb unless you are absolutely sure that you are [censored] out of luck. Pull over all the way as soon as you can into a safe area, put on your four ways, have the window down, your papers out and in your hand, the car off and both hands on the wheel so they can look into the vehicle and see your hands.

"Sir, do you know why I pulled you over?"
"No officer, why?" (be polite so they don't get aggressive with you)
"I just clocked you speeding back there."
"Ah...what is the speed limit?"
"35...and I caught you going 45."
"Oh, (expletive), my mistake..."

Usually they will let you off with a warning once they go run the plate number for your car to make sure everything is clear.

I was pulled over going 98 in a 60 and the cop pursued me probably a mile and a half without me noticing the flashers. I had time to stop, switch on my interior light, tighten my seat belt, get out my papers and put on my hazards plus roll down the window before he pulled up. As soon as he asked if I knew why I was being pulled over, I replied "probably because I was hauling [censored]," and handed him my papers. He asked me where I had been and what I had been doing that day, as well as where I was going because I was doing that at about 2 am on an empty stretch of highway the opposite direction to most traffic at that time.

He took his time in his car. I thought he was calling a tow truck, but he came back, handed me my papers and told me to slow down. I have been pulled over seven times in the past two and a half years and not gotten a ticket.

It is also possible that Olive was actually speeding and the officer wasn't out to screw innocent motorists.

There you go, in your own words "I didn't think I was going that fast." So how fast were you going? Don't know? Can't say you weren't going 59 then. :2cents:

I hope this one doesn't turn into another cop bashing thread. These and the Walmart threads are starting to get old. Oh, wait, OP was going to Walmart. It's their fault he got the ticket then.

OR,,,,

You can ask him if this is the ticket that's gonna earn him a shot at this months toaster oven.

The last time I got a ticket the city offered a 'continuance' (sp?). Which basically means you pay the fine, have absolutely no moving violations in one year, then the ticket goes in the trash and won't be sent to the DMV. The downside is that if you get another speeding ticket/ failure to stop/ yield etc. that you have to fight that one otherwise the original ticket will go on your record.

Don't know about NC, but in TX you have 3 choices. Pay it, it goes on your record, end of story.

Or...go for deferred ajudication meaning you pay the fine, and go on a 'probabtion' of sorts, not getting ANY kind of moving violation for the next 6 months. If you make it, the ticket never goes on record. If you get busted again, BOTH go on your record.

Or....pay the ticket, complete defensive driving course, mail in your certificate and the ticket doesn't go on your record. The added benefit with this method is that you can send your course completion certificate to your insurance company and receive your driver training discount.

+1. Sorry.

I set my cruise control for these low-speed areas more often than on the highway.

Exactly. Pay the ticket or go to court.
Personally I prefer to take responsibility for my F..UPs. I got a ticket (first speeding ticket after 40 years of driving.) 52 in a 35 zone. Cop knocked it down to 49 (14 over). I apologized, thanked him for the break, and told him I deserved the ticket... ..nice guy..just doing his job. No complaints.

Yes, let's not bash a cop doing his job. Really. The best policy when you're tagged is to merely say "I really don't know. I can't argue with you." and hope for the best.

In my opinion the proble is, and always has been, the definition of "speeding". The posted speed limits in many areas are ridiculously low, and you can be driving at what most, if not all, people would consider a reasonable and responsible speed and be way over the posted limit. That's the injustice and the outrage I've always felt when ticketed. I was driving safely and responsibly and the long arm of the intervenes and sanctions me when I was doing nothing wrong morally, just legally due to a ridiculous law, the low speed limits. I wish cops would exercise their common sense and discretion more often when enforcing the speed limits that they themselves don't adhere to.

Unfortunately, all the other speeders and lawbreakers are not speeding and breaking the law as safely and responsibly as you do.

Many states, including FL where I practice, have a traffic school option. In concept, after a ticket, you opt for the school, and if you complete the prescribed class (one session in low grade cases, a few more for aggravated offenders), the ticket is dropped. If FL, you can only do this one time per year, and five times max in a lifetime (IIRC).

Just got done with a brutal felony Docket Day this afternoon. One of my memorable cases involved a pretty young woman, early 20s, fully qualified for a fashion magazine cover (with proper clothing, of course) (and this is with two kids!). She is facing a minimum of a year in the county jail, and could go to prison, for up to five years. Her crime? Driving on a Suspended License. Her problem is that she has three prior DWLS convictions, and has been designated a "habitual traffic offender". She's all upset now, and can't understand why she's facing a healthy wallop of jail time.

Moral of story: make sure that ticket is taken care of, don't let your DL get suspended, and by all means, if it does, don't drive for any reason until you've got it back.
