BOSS 429? I've never had the privilege of owning that monster but that car is on my top 10 list, and very near the top.

I'm curious what those cars are in your list...

OM603 Mercedes diesel, on its cam at 5k what a nice sound.

My dream car, this is what I'm saving my pennies for. Love the 355!

Not in order:

Only a few of them are actually viable. Wouldn't have to be numbers matching cars or anything. The BOSS 429 is one of those. A buddy of mine found one a few years back but the guy who had it knew what it was and wasn't willing to part with it. He had acquired it through the passing of its original owner (bought it new!) and was going to restore it and flip it

'93 Cobra is doable, as is the Termi and the R. Even the Charger could be done, would have to buy a non-HEMI car and turn it into one, but definitely a viable project.

In 69 I bought a new GTX 440. Best sounding car I ever owned.
Wish I still had it. Of course there were many I would like to have back today.

Oh yeah, love the sound of triples. My wife had a Triumph Trident, I always rode behind her just to hear it. One car I did have with a nice sound was a Daihatsu Charade GT Ti, the dohc turbo, with just a cherry bomb the sound was glorious.

And the best sounding 3cyl is the Commer TS3.

You, my friend, have good taste in cars. I too like the previous generation Mustangs as well as the classic ones. I hope you get the ones within reach. Thanks for sharing your list!

My 460 powered '79 Mustang sounded mean. I even left the 2.8L badges on the side. "Wanna race?, It's just a small exhaust leak".

My solid lifter 355cid Malibu has an evil cam and sounds pretty good too.

Thank you very much for your kind words and no problem, thank you for asking

My favorite sounding/feeling engines had props attached to them. Yup, you can feel the power rumble, almost like a subwoofer.

Right now, I do enjoy the sound of the oval sport exhaust in our Volvo R.

Best stocker was a big block Ford 429, or Mopar 440, both from the '60s. Duals, of course.

You'll be surprised, but it was my 1989 Honda Accord LXi. I believe they were after the BMW 3-series sound at the time and they pretty well accomplished it. Even with 350,000 miles on it the engine made such a smooth, sweet sound every time it revved I couldn't help but oblige the gas pedal.

Did you 'grey market' this over here, or were you stationed in Okinawa, or somewhere in the far east??

Grey market car. Drove it around here in Atlanta for years. It got turned into a track car in TX. Very fast car. Ran mid-low 12 seconds in the 1/4 and trapped low 120s.

Owned? My current car is the best sounding I've owned IMO (and internally stock)

For 4 cylinder, still got this engine sitting in the backyard.
Best sounding 4cyl IMO (and excluding N/A intake noises, which even my old 2.2L Camry had, sans resonator).

Totally stock naturally aspirated 1985-era 2.0 engine with a turbo slapped on.
If you don't like Puerto Rican music, skip to 4:40

For some reason , all other boosted 4 cylinders sounds raspy, coarse, strained and farty sadly, especially Hondas :S

My 1988 M6; the cat was replaced with a track pipe. It had a great throaty rumble.

I guess I'm an oddball, but I LOVE the sound of the Inline-5 in my VW. I've owned several engine combos in vehicles over the years, but the I5 takes the cake. After 2500rpms it starts singing really well. VR6's are sexy sounding, but IMO not like the I5...

That's not oddball. Lots of people have loved turbo 5 cyl Audis in Group B rally for 30 years. Also I think of BTCC Volvo 850 R's. Big difference between those and a 2.5 NA jetta but still.

Right on. There is something special about the burble of a five-pot engine.

We had that VW 2.5, and it is a really nice engine with just enough growl.

If you love the VW 2.5, then you owe it to yourself to stomp on a Volvo white block, turbo preferred. All that growly burble, but a sweeter refinement that sings at you approach redline. And a small block V-8 power rush to boot.

Tack one of these on one, and you've got a really nice soundtrack for a curvy back road:
