just wondering, who here with a GM dexos vehicle changes their oil with non dexos oil and does not think twice about it? My buddys '11 1500 4.8, gonna be using Pennzoil Ultra 5W30 for 6-7k from here on out. Also read somewhere that dexos isnt required just recommended? His truck does not say dexos on the fill cap, just in the owners manual, so if someone else were to change it(a non bitoger without so much focus on oil lol) they probably wouldnt be aware of the dexos spec.

Pennzoil Ultra would easily pass Dexos testing but Supus isn't paying for it. That being said any oil related failure would probably be backed up by Pennzoil.

My 2013 Cadillac ATS says dexos SAE 5w30 on the oil cap. The "Recommended Fluids, Lubricants, and Parts" table of the owner's manual states, "Use only engine oil licensed to the dexos1 specification, or equivalent, of the proper SAE viscosity grade." The "or equivalent" seem to indicate that a dexos-licensed oil is not required, but rather recommended. But that's just my interpretation.

I certainly wouldn't hesitate to use PU or Pennzoil Platinum 5w30 SN in my vehicle, though neither is dexos-licensed.

I use a Schaeffer 9003D 5w30 full synthetic. Not dexos approved but meets/exceeds spec.

As per my 2013 owners manual for my Silverado, dexos or equivalent. Schaeffer is plenty equivalent. There is NO requirement to use only an oil on the "approved" dexos list.

Doesn't really matter. There are a lot of oils, both on the list and not on it, that would do quite nicely. If you have a large paranoia gland, then use one on the list. If you have your paranoia gland under control, then do what your gut tells you.

paranoia gland under control lol. right now it has Mobil 1 Extended Performance 10w30 in it. No oil seems to help the tapping/piston slap noise i had posted about a few weeks ago. but it hasnt gotten worse.

Pennzoil Platinum IS dexos licensed, Pennzoil Ultra is not.

Before my current truck I had a 2011 4.8, only for 30k miles bought it new, it to had piston slap noise only at start up, it really was noticeable, I first noticed it during the 1st winter of ownership (maybe within 7/10k miles of ownership).
My 09 5.3 didn't do any such noise and my current 5.3 does not either, I think it's just the nature of the beast (4.8).

I read on the web a few guys with the 4.8s, they had what they thought was slap, brought it to the dealer, heads were pulled only to find out they had a scored cylinder. I hope thats not the case with this truck, it does not burn any oil. Ive been changing the oil at 5k ocis, but ill go to 6-7k now, as my buddy does not drive the truck hard at all and makes mostly long distance trips. Really the only time it gets driven hard is when im behind the wheel lol

Gotta love it when language like that is put in a manual for maintenance. Who's the judge on what is or isn't equivalent? The consumer who decides any syn blend is equivalent, or a GM engineer who sees no Dexos stamp and automatically considers it not equivalent? Play it safe and stick with Dexos rated oils.

There is also a difference between using PU or some highline botique oil like Redline or Motul, as opposed to using some cheap dino.

If PP meets dexos, PU should have no problem.

There is also Ashland's products, like Durablend, Synpower, and Napa synthetic that meet the standards and say dexos1 on the bottle but didn't feel like coughing up the royalty to display the green logo and supply GM with unearned income. If I had a GM car that was under warranty, I'd use Valvoline.
