For the last 20+ years I received postcard 2-3 times, I called on the date and always dismissed.

Some years before when I was in Santa Ana I went to court on the dates(every 2 years), but never got selected, either defense attorney or DA refused.

If the former President can show up for jury duty what excuse do you have?

It's not uncommon for high-profile politicians to be called for jury duty.
In April, Chief Justice John Roberts was summoned to jury duty and was seen at the Montgomery County courthouse in Maryland, performing his civic duty as a potential juror for a car crash case. Vice President Joe Biden also reported for jury duty in Delaware on January 2011 but was not selected to serve.

Unlike them, I actually WORK for a living!

After my mother's 18 months of headaches (which she figured out cost her over $1000, WITHOUT any lost wages), I will do whatever is required to not end up on a jury.

Now I understand comrade. I'm afraid at the moment, you cannot volunteer selectively for a government political show trial. The kollective is anxious to punish Arpaio and no doubt will call on you soon. The postcards for show trials and regular court cases from the jury manager all look the same..so be alert.

Jury Duty is kind of a joke in this country... it shouldn't be but it is. Because only losers seem to show up for it.

But I don't mean it the way it sounds! What I mean is that the people that really need to show up - the intelligent, those that care about justice, those that give a [censored] whats going on in the local justice system are usually gainfully employed and in some states can't even afford the time off. (When I was called for Jury Duty I was reimbursed _$5_ per whole day - yes less than one hour for McDonalds, I also had to pay to drive myself which cost me about $6 per day though. I was then taxed on the $5 as income at the end of the year... :P)

The people I saw there depressed me so severely that I was convinced justice was dead in my country. These are my peers?? People that didn't know anything, people that were subject to the most transparent of manipulations by either the defense or the prosecutor. I was universally thrown off most of the time by simply being the only person asking intelligent questions (which I thought I was supposed to do) and later when they realized I knew of jury nullification and actually had the audacity to correct the judge that we were the ones judging the applicability of the law whether it was being fairly applied or not I must've been labeled a troublemaker. Once I was even thrown off by both the defense AND the prosecutor over the same case! (I guess they decided I was either such a wildcard or smarter than all of them plus the judge that I might end up having them all called in for miscarriage of justice??)

I listened to "public pretenders" so incompetent they sounded like they were boringly reading off a script on a D-grade middle school theater play. I watched annoying slick prosecutors find excuses to take me off future cases once they realized I was the only thinker there and talked of jury nullification yet I came back to watch the cases without me at least in part that I was no longer a juror on and wanted to stand up and yell objections for the defense that the lawyer wasn't. I watched stupid entitled rich kids with slick lawyers emotionally manipulate the jurors into letting them off over transparent excuses seeing the two class justice system in effect.

At the end of the experience I was left with the feeling that it would be nice to make a difference but that it's such an uphill battle that it's not something I would care to do again with my time. Like donating my time to help the homeless at a soup kitchen, it's something that ideally should probably be done, but feels like a drop in the bucket in a hopelessly large problem that's just getting worse no matter how hard I resist it anyways. Which makes me say "time for Plan B since this wont change it anyway".

I just received a jury duty notice and I have to report Thursday morning. Am I happy about it? No. But it's part of being an adult and my civic duty. I've received and about 8-10 jury duty summons in my life time. Served once on a civil matter. I guess the part that really bothers me is the people that shrug their civic responsibilities. Each time during roll call for the prospective jurors, at least a third are "no shows". I sure some have legitimate reasons for not being there, I consider the rest to be deadbeats of society. Man up and do what's right!

You know, an actual human being put that Jury Duty postcard into your mailbox.
That person takes physical notes when Jury Duty notices are delivered, as part of their job duties.

Since you receive mail for your name at your current address, and have been for a while, this one person is the person that will be able to say that your jury duty letter was delivered to the address that you receive all your other mail at.

But, only you can decide if skipping jury duty may be worth having to talk to a judge about why you decided to ignore the summons.

BC.

Compensate people for their actual loss of income when serving on a jury, pass legislation providing protections from employer sanctions equivalent to that available to military reservists reporting for active duty, provide parking vouchers as well as mileage reimbursement for those called and you might see better jury pools and better juries.
As it is now, you stand to either lose days of pay or burn days of earned vacation to serve on a jury as well as to have out of pocket transportation and parking expenses.
The lawyers get paid, the judges get paid and all of the bailiffs, clerks of court and sheriff's deputies get paid. None of them are out of pocket for anything required to show up in court.
Why shouldn't the jurors, who are the sole triers of fact in any American jurisdiction get the same consideration?
I will not be put in a position of being made to work for less than free after accounting for both driving and parking expenses just because I get some cheesy postcard in the mail.
Incidentally, mailing something out does not constitute valid service anywhere in this country.
If we want good juries, we have to be willing to compensate their members as well as we compensate everyone else in our criminal justice system from the jailers to the bailers.

Most people aren't that informed.
Jury nullification of a charge is SUPPOSED to protect defendants from the enforcement of unjust criminal laws. How it would be used to "get" Sheriff Joe is beyond me, but it might be used to get him off. The mindless repeating of something which sounds good on late night radio can often lead to "removing all doubt".

In any jurisdiction I've ever heard of, if you had simply trashed the card you would never have heard another thing about it.
Still, your jurisdiction may feel the need to make an example of someone and you've just provided a good candidate for that.

Here in Georgia if you fail to show up..you will get another letter and if you ignore that one..you may get a LEO visit.

If they cannot find you at your address or you ignore the letters, your name may be stricken from the voting register..that is how they found you in the first place..and you may get a bill/fine from the court.

Once you are finally compelled to show up for jury duty..plan on spending some time in the jury pool..they will make your life miserable.

+1 on the elimination from the voting list. Of course, those who duck jury duty probably don't deserve to vote, either.

As mentioned, one could claim hardship. One could also, when interviewed, make some very off colour remarks about police and/or people accused by police and be excused because of bias.

Los Angeles' court presorts jurors by how many days they are employer-compensated.
My guess is the 0 day box gets light cases.
The 10 day box gets homicides, and grand theft and police evasion.

You don't need to make an off-the cuff remark or be snide about it if you want to get out.

The judge will always ask will you judge this case fairly or some similar statement.
At that point, if you have the guts to such a figure of authority, you can then just say you are going to vote guilty to get this over with as soon as possible which is pretty much grounds for dismissal.
You are not on trial, so your politics or opinions aren't of interest.

Let's be honest, jury duty is a common running joke in the US. Just about every sitcom and TV show has made fun of it. Simpsons did it. So the OP is not really that bad of a guy and probably in the majority opinion versus all the idealist.

Most of the time it is an overall waste of human hours from an efficiency or economist perspective
-so few get picked.
-a lot of the time is spent by the lawyers on motions and legalese while the jury waits outside or in an empty room,
-Like a lot of law shows, a lot of the cases are settled or dismissed, without the jury doing anything but only after a lot of the People's time is used playing the game with the lawyer manuevering.

Geez, tough crowd!

Everyone I know that has been called goes down, sits in the waiting room all day and is then dismissed and told they weren't needed. I have no interest in having my time wasted. I posted in a bit of a huff but after thinking about it, I followed the instructions on the card to confirm receipt and will report if instructed to.

Thank you all for reminding me of my civic duty!

Years ago I was sent a letter but did not serve as it was a rape case and I had a daughter that was raped while underage, so that disqualified me.

Here in my later years I have been sent a letter and called the court house if there was close in parking as I walk mostly with a walker or wheel chair. This BTW is the truth.

My name was taken off the lists forever.

I've been called 4 times. Two in Chicago IL and two times in Fort Myers Fl. I guess, I come from a different cut because, I feel some responsibility to respond and go if called. Seems we have enough malcontents without me adding my name to the pile of jerks. Ed

I went and got chosen once for jury duty, never again.

Besides falling behind at my job (they pay 100% of my salary)... I don't want to be in a room arguing with jurors feeling sorry for guilty defendant.

I have been out of the Navy 12 years and have gotten a summons every year, plus one for Federal.

My wife has lived here my whole life never a day in the Military...2 Summons. Random my...

I spent enough time deployed under water that they should just leave me alone. I go when called but I don't like it and really don't
have to. I don't care for our justice system.
