If they cannot find you at your address or you ignore the letters, your name may be stricken from the voting register..that is how they found you in the first place..and you may get a bill/fine from the court.

Once you are finally compelled to show up for jury duty..plan on spending some time in the jury pool..they will make your life miserable.

If they do not send it via certified mail, how can they prove that the summons was ever delivered?
Beat them at their own game.

Agreed. Maybe a box I can check on my state tax form... $250 a year for guaranteed no jury duty sounds fair.

This beauty will whine about what "those judges and lawyers" do but won't take the time to do what the jury system was intended to do, act as a check and balance. Jury lists are usually made up from lists of registered voters, do us a favor, duck jury duty by getting off the voting list.

During the time I've been with my current employer, I was called twice. Neither time would my employer compensate me in any way if I ended up having to serve. As a result, I was excused both times. Can't afford to miss any work if at all possible.

We thank you for your consideration for the person who has to go in your place.

Not true. My brother got a jury notice despite not being a registered voter.

You are unaware of the laws which stipulate that regular mail to your address is proper service. The Brits call your suggestion "too clever by half".

I said "USUALLY" sparkie. Now, address the FIRST part of my comment. Or didn't you bother to read it. The jury commissioner can also use drivers license lists, tax rolls, or lists of people on the dole. In this state a judge can send sheriffs out into the street to grab people right off the sidewalk if needed, and have done so, so stay away from the court houses.

That can happen these days...voter registrations are a source for the jury pool, DMV drivers licenses database and state tax returns feed the courts jury manager.

First source is the voter registrations..as they are thought to be the most accurate if you voted recently..state or local tax returns are good too.

Unless the jury letter(s) are returned by the USPS as undeliverable..the jury manager makes the correct legal assumption that you got the letters. You will be given the opportunity to explain why you did not get the jury letters to the judge.

Most people aren't that informed.

I've never been called to Jury Duty. Are the letters CLEARLY marked what they are? I rely on snail mail 0% of the time, basically anything I get goes straight into the shredder as its all bank offers and fake car warranty extensions.

Then only those that can't afford to buy their way out of jury will be on the jury.

most people aren't really informed enough to be allowed to vote.

Calm down, princess.

In my state, anyway, there is a presumption that an item sent by first class mail, as that item is plainly marked, was correctly delivered. The person asserting otherwise has the burden of proving it. They could have sent it to you by certified mail, rstricted delivery, return receipt requested, but that is expensive, and you would likely have to go to the post office and stand in line to get it. Or, they could pay someone to personally put it in your hand. That is even more expensive. Most taxpayers like to see things done the inexpensive way.

Personally, if someone does not want to be on jury duty, I don't want them on my jury. It would be malpractice not to figure this out and get rid of them.

That said, don't annoy us with opinions about killer cops, criminals that get off too light or too harsh, or crazy civil lawsuits, since you have "no interest" in being a useful participant in the process.

P.S. I have actually seen Sheriff's sent out to pick someone up and bring them in for jury duty.

When I had to serve, there were a number of absent folks when they were calling people up to the stand to be interviewed. Somebody asked the bailiff what happens to those people who didn't show up, and he told us that technically they can be charged with a misdemeanor, although the court is busy enough that -maybe- they won't bother with going after them. He assured us that if they ran out of potential jurors and you're one of the people on the list who didn't show up, they would send a chauffeured limousine for you to escort you there. Translation: Issue a warrant and send an officer with a squad car to find you. Oh, and if it came to that, then you will get that misdemeanor charge - after you did your jury duty.

Yes, it's an inconvenience, but it's your duty.
