Jump starting fixes everything

If you hooked it up right it shouldn't cause any problems, right?
I know the order when hooking up should be ++-- with the engine running. With junk booster cables you could cause a short.

My uncle incorrectly hooked up jumper cables one time. It fried the fusible link.

You might not be quite as right as you think you are. For example, our shadow. It cranks fine, but often won't start, especially when hot. The reason for this appears to be that the starter is shot. (The gears and clutch are shot for sure) It pulls way too much current, and doesn't leave enough for the ignition coil to spark properly. Thus, even though it cranks, jump starting it often results in it starting within seconds, whereas I could have been cranking for minutes on just the battery alone.\

However, that IS a special circumstance, and you are probably right for most cases.

Eff it I thought.

1/2 hour later I hear the dreaded click, then the scowler comes over and asks for a jump.

The correct answer: "No."

Okay, I remember one wierd case, now that I think about it.
This was awhile ago, and it was a toyota, IIRC.
Cust. Brought it in to have the battery tested.
Get in to move it in, and it just cranks. Cranked strong too! Im thinking at this point the battery is probably good. But wouldnt fire. Cust. says, "Oh, it just needs a jump."
Im going, Right, sure. I hook up the jumper box to humor her. Didnt work. So I was right. Or so I thought.
At some point, someones vehicle was brought over and hooked up with jumper cables. IIRC by this point we had just tested the battery where it sat and were trying to get her on her way.
Ill be [censored] if it didnt fire up right away while hooked to another running engine. Jumper box wouldnt work.

The sad part of jumper cables is they have four alligator clips while you, the good samaritan, only have two hands. The other two clips could be in the hands of a goon.

Have read here of jumpers taking the jumpee's keys so they don't crank until told to. Would be good (and douchey-- but beggars can't be choosers) to instruct the jumpee that the jumper will be calling ALL the shots as far as hook up order is concerned.

I don't help people with jumping anymore. I read somewhere in the owners manual of the Volvo to not jump or get jumped, so I no longer carry cables. Last thing I want is some moron trying to re-engineer electricity.

When I worked at Sears in the Auto Center people would have cars brought in and towed for no starts and assumed it was a battery. When you get in a car and it crank and cranks and cranks, odds are the battery and starter are good. This was when we were limited on the jobs we could do, so they would have to get it towed to someone else to put in a fuel pump.

I'll only jump someone if they're either a friend, or they're in a parking lot with an obviously dead battery.

I carry a set of 2 gauge jumper cables in the Jeep, which have never failed to work. I once jumped a friend's Jeep with his battery showing 8 volts (he had a stereo fail and drain it overnight), and I didn't even have my Jeep running. His cranked like it had a brand new battery in it.

Same. And if you think that I know enough about cars to call me to help with a problem, take my advice when I suggest what it might be in the event we can't get it running.

Friend of my wife's called me last winter. Their newer ('07 ish) Sebring wouldn't start and her husband (who's worthless as far as car repair anyway) is out of town. I try to start it... nothing. Toss the charger on and check it 10min later. The charger says the battery is full... uh oh.

Play around with it for a bit. Crank no start. Then no crank at all. Electrical is acting goofy as in the radio initially would turn on but then didn't at all. Door locks work but the trunk release doesn't. Then I see a message pop up in the cluster about "bus" something something. Look it up online and its one of 3 things all related to a bad ground.

I wrote down all the symptoms as well as a description of the "bus" issue. She has it towed to their regular mechanic who replaces the battery. ???? Why? The battery was perfectly fine which I verified with a load tester. Magically the car works again... for a while. Then same symptoms again. She finally gets it fixed and it turns out to be a bad guage cluster. The solder jobs on these are apparently a known issue and cause just such a no-start condition because of the bad ground.

Contrast it to the very very old gentleman I run into at the parts counter in NAPA while I'm buying oil. He needs a new headlight but is confused about how to replace it since he's really only familiar with sealed beam headlights (first newer vehicle he's had in 25 years). I tell him I'll take care of it for you, walk outside, and pop in the replacement in his late 2005 GM truck in about 2 minutes. He's extremely grateful and wants to offer me $10 for helping, which I decline telling him to put it towards taking his wife out for a nice dinner and I walk away leaving them both with a big smile on their faces.

when I see idiots trying to get a car started I won't help, too many ways to get myself burned, literally and figuratively. like idiots who are parked uphill in the snow, trying to push the car out while having the throttle floored (because hey, it'll eventually burn through the snow and ice, right?)
cute girls stuck in the snow? yeah, they will always get my help

people get weird with this stuff.

I've towed cars out of ditches, pulled folks out of wrecked cars, changed flat tires, and taken stranded motorists to a store or pay phone. I've been snookered, too.

when there's too much testosterone, I walk away. sometimes it works out. 5 men trying to erect a volleyball net for the girls team... I offered, was quickly seen as the runt of the litter, I walked away. 10 minutes into practice, no net. coach approaches me. "sure, i have rope, climbing webbing, and beaners in the jeep." I came back and not only included the "bigger" men but also put them to work, what to tie, and where, and invited their opinions. the good vibes did last; was nice.

I recall jumping off a LTD by shorting the solenoid, which blew the owner's mind. I also jumped a dodge with a bad solenoid (on the motor) by jumping directly to the motor input while he keyed the solenoid.

but also got burned-- helped out a young lady that said she was out of gas. she hopped in my car for a 1 mile drive to a gas station and back. got real suspicious when she couldn't figure out the gas pump. back to her car, and the starter spun and spun... without ever catching the flywheel. I told her gas wasn't the problem, and try as I could, I couldn't twist the engine enuf to get to a good tooth on the wheel (sounded like a stripped tooth). she got upset, saying her mom was going to be mad... and I assured her that a new cavalier with 17,000 was under warranty, this wasn't her fault. she said her mom only lived 2 blocks away-- can I get her car there? No... then her friend said, "oooooh your mom's gonna ground you again when she finds out you took the car...."

and I said, "what?"

and she looked sheepish. and her friend looked VERY sheepish.

so I said, "how old are you?!?"

her friend said, "I'm walking home" and turned to leave.

and she said, "15."

and I said, "ok. you go stand over there. I am going to coast your car off this road, into that parking lot so it's out of the middle of the road. then you are to either walk home or follow your friend." I turned on my heels, did exactly that, gave her the keys and drove off, STUNNED. I'd had a 15 year-old girl in my personal vehicle during that trip to the gas station and back, as she posed as someone older. I don't know what liability I could have faced, but in this day and age who knows. I wanted no part of that, and certainly wasn't going to help out a 15 year old kid that had taken her mom's car. she said she lived close by, her friend obviously did, so she was in no harm by me leaving. and i did. quickly.
